Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Corbin Burnes is aiming to return to the mound around the 2026 MLB All-Star break after missing the latter part of the 2025 season due to Tommy John surgery. The 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner made the announcement as he continues his rehabilitation process following the procedure.
Burnes, who was acquired by the Diamondbacks prior to the 2025 season, was expected to be a key piece in the team’s starting rotation. However, his debut campaign with Arizona was cut short when he underwent reconstructive elbow surgery. The injury not only sidelined him for the remainder of the 2025 season but also put his availability for the early part of 2026 in question.
Speaking recently, Burnes expressed optimism about the progress of his recovery and said his current goal is to be back on the field shortly after the All-Star break, which typically takes place in mid-July. Though the timeline depends on how his rehabilitation continues, the pitcher voiced confidence in the training staff and his ongoing physical therapy.
“We’re taking things step by step, and everything so far has been progressing well,” Burnes said. “The goal is to be back around the All-Star break, but we’ll continue to monitor everything as we go.”
Tommy John surgery, a procedure to repair a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in the elbow, usually requires a recovery period of 12 to 18 months. Burnes underwent the surgery during the 2025 season, and a midseason 2026 return would fall within the standard recovery timeline.
In his last full season prior to the injury, Burnes posted strong numbers and remained one of the more effective starting pitchers in the league. His absence was felt within the Diamondbacks’ rotation, which had to adjust following his departure.
Arizona’s front office and coaching staff have voiced their support for Burnes throughout the recovery process. If he returns to full strength, his presence could significantly bolster the team’s performance in the second half of the 2026 season.
