Cowboys Expected to Use Franchise Tag on George Pickens

The Dallas Cowboys are reportedly planning to place the franchise tag on wide receiver George Pickens, according to sources familiar with the team’s intentions. This decision would ensure that the Pro Bowl pass-catcher remains with the team for at least one more season, as the two sides continue discussions on a potential long-term contract.

Pickens, who has quickly developed into a key offensive weapon, would receive a one-year salary determined by the NFL’s formula for the position under the franchise tag designation. The move reflects the Cowboys’ intent to retain one of their most productive players on offense while negotiations toward a multi-year agreement continue.

Since joining the team, Pickens has demonstrated strong chemistry with quarterback Dak Prescott and has consistently been a top target in the passing game. His combination of size, speed, and reliable hands has made him a versatile threat in both short-yardage situations and deep routes. In the most recent season, he posted career-high numbers, solidifying his status as one of the league’s top wideouts.

Using the franchise tag is a strategic step by the organization that allows Dallas to keep Pickens off the open market when the free agency period begins, giving them exclusive negotiating rights. While the tag may represent a temporary solution, it buys the team more time to work out a longer deal without risking the loss of a top contributor.

The Cowboys have utilized the franchise tag before with other key players, often as a stopgap measure to retain talent and manage salary cap logistics. The move toward tagging Pickens indicates the franchise’s high valuation of his contributions and acknowledges his importance to the team’s offensive success.

As of now, no official deal has been reached, and the team has not released a public statement. However, the expectation is that the franchise tag will be applied before the league-mandated deadline, allowing the Cowboys to continue contract discussions with Pickens as the offseason progresses.
