The Dallas Cowboys have released veteran cornerback Trevon Diggs, according to reports. Diggs, who was drafted by Dallas in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, had become a central figure in the team’s secondary over his four seasons with the franchise.

Known for his aggressive style and playmaking ability, Diggs quickly made a name for himself in the league. He led the NFL in interceptions during the 2021 season with 11 picks, earning Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro honors. His ability to generate turnovers brought both praise and scrutiny, as analysts also noted his susceptibility to giving up big plays in coverage.

Diggs signed a five-year contract extension with the Cowboys in July 2023. However, he suffered a season-ending injury early in the 2023 campaign, impacting his contributions on the field. The decision to release him may reflect ongoing questions about his recovery, fit within the current defensive scheme, or salary cap considerations as the team looks to retool its roster.

His departure marks a significant change in the Cowboys’ defensive backfield. Over his career in Dallas, Diggs recorded over a dozen interceptions and was known for his instinctive play and ball skills. His release opens up potential starting opportunities for younger defensive backs already on the roster, as well as options for the Cowboys to explore additional depth in free agency or through the upcoming NFL Draft.

The move underscores the often fluid nature of NFL rosters, especially during the offseason when teams must make key personnel decisions ahead of the league’s new year. While Diggs’ next destination remains unclear, his proven track record as a playmaker in the secondary will likely draw interest from multiple teams seeking to bolster their pass defense.

No official comment has been released by either the Cowboys organization or Trevon Diggs as of yet.
