Matthew Boyd underwent successful surgery on his left meniscus, the Chicago Cubs announced Thursday, after the left-hander suffered the injury while playing with his children. General manager Carter Hawkins told 670 The Score earlier Thursday that Boyd will miss at least a month, the report says.
The team did not provide a firm timeline for Boyd’s return but said he will be placed on the 15-day injured list for the second time this season. Boyd is 2-1 with a 6.00 ERA in five games this season and made 31 starts in 2025; he also participated in the World Baseball Classic during spring training, the report says.
Boyd will join top-end starters Justin Steele and Cade Horton on the injured list. The report says Steele is expected back later this summer while Horton remains out until next year with elbow injuries.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell stopped short of naming right-hander Javier Assad as Boyd’s replacement, per the report. The team has described its plans around Boyd’s next scheduled start, which comes Friday against the Texas Rangers, as “loose.”
The report says the Cubs have so far managed their pitching absences thanks to a deep offense that ranks third in scoring at 5.4 runs per game. Chicago has won eight in a row and 18 of 21 games overall after beating the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 on Wednesday night. Also per the report, Corbin Martin, who gave up three runs without recording an out in the ninth inning Wednesday, was designated for assignment.
