Da Bears Celebrate 100 Years and the Texans Fire Their GM

This weekend is a special one for the Chicago Bears. The Bears are celebrating their 100th year as a professional football team, and they are bringing back all their legends. William Perry, Devin Hester, and Dick Butkus were among the stars in attendance, but the most heartwarming moment involved Gale Sayers. Sayers has been battling dementia for the last six years, and he received a huge ovation when he was brought on stage. The Kansas Comet was Barry Sanders before Barry Sanders, but injuries kept him from reaching his potential. He only played seven seasons, yet he made enough of an impact to be named to the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.

The Houston Texans dropped a bombshell on Friday afternoon. The team announced that it was parting ways with general manager Brian Gaine just before their mandatory minicamp starts next week. Gaine was hired in January 2018, and it was stunning to see him fired after both the NFL Draft and rookie minicamp took place. He is the second general manager to be fired at an unusual time of the year, following the New York Jets parting ways with Mike Maccagnan in mid-May.

Speaking of the New York Jets, they hired a new general manager earlier today. The Jets were able to snag Joe Douglas away from the Philadelphia Eagles, and while many have called this a shrewd move, others are highlighting a potential conflict of interest. Jimmy Sexton now represents the Jets’ general manager, head coach, and franchise quarterback.

There was an interesting development north of the border too. The Montreal Alouettes fired former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike Sherman less than a week before the start of the regular season. Montreal continues to be an unmitigated disaster, and this is just the latest in a series of mind-numbing moves since Marc Trestman left for the NFL and Anthony Calvillo retired.
