Veteran forward Danilo Gallinari has officially announced his retirement from professional basketball, bringing a close to a distinguished career that spanned more than a decade in the NBA. Gallinari, originally from Italy, emerged as one of the premier European imports of his generation, known for his shooting ability, versatility, and basketball IQ.

Gallinari was selected sixth overall in the 2008 NBA Draft by the New York Knicks. After beginning his NBA career in New York, he was traded to the Denver Nuggets in 2011 as part of the deal that sent Carmelo Anthony to the Knicks. Over the course of his career, he played for several teams including the Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers, Oklahoma City Thunder, Atlanta Hawks, and most recently, the Washington Wizards.

Throughout his NBA tenure, Gallinari consistently served as a reliable scoring option and stretch forward. He finishes his career having played in more than 700 regular season games and averaging over 15 points per game. His free throw shooting and ability to space the floor made him a valuable asset to each team he joined. Injuries, including a significant ACL tear in 2013 and later setbacks, posed challenges, but Gallinari remained a productive player whenever healthy.

Gallinari also represented Italy internationally, playing in numerous FIBA competitions and becoming one of the national team’s most prominent figures in the modern era. His performances on the international stage were marked by leadership and consistent scoring, helping elevate Italy’s presence in global basketball.

In his statement announcing his retirement, Gallinari expressed gratitude for his time in the NBA and appreciation for the fans, teammates, coaches, and staff who supported him throughout his journey. He did not specify immediate post-retirement plans but left open the possibility of staying involved in the sport.

Gallinari’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of Italy’s most accomplished basketball exports. His impact on the league and international game leaves a lasting legacy that reflects not only his talent but also his professionalism and dedication.
