David Wright Probable for Disabled List

According to reports, it looks like New York Mets Captain David Wright will head to the disabled list today, thanks to a herniated disc in his neck. The Mets head into the weekend series with the Miami Marlins without their regulars Lucas Duda and now Wright.

It’s not David Wright’s first go-around with neck and back issues – he suffers from spinal stenosis, which, according to the Mayo Clinic, is a narrowing of the open spaces within the spine, which can put pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves that travel through the spine to the arms and legs. Spinal stenosis occurs most often in the lower back and the neck, although right now there is no indication – and no comment — that the neck issue is being caused by the stenosis. He received a cortisone injection in his neck a few days ago, but Wright needs additional rest and medical support.

It is believed that David Wright will be out for 4 to 6 weeks, but again as of press time, nothing has been confirmed by the New York Mets. It is also expected that Wilmer Flores will serve as third baseman and that the Mets will call up infielder Matt Reynolds from Triple-A Las Vegas. Long term isn’t being discussed quite yet, as well as any surgery options, but with some major medical issues, Wright might be looking at some hard decisions about his future.

Lucas Duda, the Mets first basement is sidelined for sidelined for the next four to six weeks. He is also suffering with a back issue, as he has a stress fracture in his lower back

The Mets start their road trip in Miami at 7pm tonight, after coming off a hard 13-inning loss, with Jacob deGrom whiffing 10 Chicago White Sox batters in a stellar performance. Unfortunately, his one slip was at the hands of Todd Frazier, who hit a homer to left-center field, tying up the game 1-1. The Chicago White Sox relief pitcher – a relief pitcher! – Matt Albers knocked in the go ahead, and ultimate winning, run for the Sox in the 13th inning. (Hey it’s not like we haven’t seen pitchers contributing hits lately, right Colon?)

The Mets embark on a 10-game road trip starting Friday. It’s tied for the second-longest trip of the year. New York will play 17 of its next 25 away from Citi Field. The Mets are 14-11 on the road this season.

Tonight, Noah Syndergaard takes his 5-2 record and his 1.84 ERA to the mound for the New York Mets as they try and kick off this road trip with a win. They’ll face Tom Koehler (3-5, 4.50 ERA) and the Miami Marlins (29-25) in the first of a three-game series at Marlins Park.

It’s Syndergaard’s first start since his ejection, although he did make a relief appearance the other day.

The Marlins have won their last three games while the Mets have lost their last two.

A congrats to Steven Matz who was was named the National League Rookie of the Month for May. According to the release, Matz, who turned 25 on May 29, went 4-0 with a 1.83 ERA (seven earned runs/34.1 innings) in five starts in May. He issued four walks, struck out 31 and opponents hit .180 against him in May. Overall, Matz leads all rookies in wins (seven), ERA (2.60 – minimum 30.0 innings) and strikeouts (53).

Matz is 11-1 in 15 career regular season games in the majors. He won seven straight starts from April 17-May 25, becoming the first Mets pitcher to do so since Steve Trachsel in 2006. According to Elias, Matz is one of two lefties since 1900 to win 11 of their first 15 major league starts, joining Kazuhisa Ishii of the Dodgers in 2002.

Matz is the third Mets player to earn Rookie of the Month honors, joining infielder Justin Turner (May, 2011) and Jacob deGrom (July, 2014 and September, 2014). The Award was established in 2001.
