Declan Doyle brings aggressive teaching style to reboot Ravens offense

Declan Doyle, hired in January as the Baltimore Ravens’ offensive coordinator, has been teaching a condensed playbook to the team during the spring program. Doyle, who was the NFL’s youngest offensive coordinator when hired at 29 and turned 30 on March 6, has been pushing large amounts of information at a rapid pace to test what quarterback Lamar Jackson and his teammates can absorb.

Players and coaches have praised Doyle’s command of the scheme. Pro Bowl receiver Zay Flowers said Doyle talks quickly enough that he sometimes tells him to “chill, chill.” Flowers called Doyle “a genius,” while Ravens defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver described him as “a human computer” with a “Rolodex of plays” and an almost photographic memory.

Doyle is taking over an offense that regressed last season, dropping to No. 16 in total yards and No. 11 in points after previous high finishes. Baltimore led the NFL in total yards in 2024 and had the league’s highest-scoring offense in 2019, but finished last season with 332.2 yards per game, the lowest mark in Lamar Jackson’s eight NFL seasons. A team source told ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that internal “bickering” emerged late in the season over a perceived lack of targets for certain players.

His résumé includes a recent turnaround in Chicago, where Doyle served as offensive coordinator and the Bears rose from last in total yards in 2024 to No. 6 in 2025. Doyle has emphasized explosiveness in his offensive vision. In 2025, when Ben Johnson was the playcaller and Doyle the coordinator, Bears quarterback Caleb Williams had 28 completions on passes that traveled at least 20 yards in the air, the fifth-most in the NFL, a pointer to the type of downfield emphasis Doyle favors. Jackson said the connection with Doyle is already strong: “It’s smooth. I love it,” Jackson said. “Just know that I love it, and everyone else loves it.”

Doyle said he deliberately challenges players in spring work to accelerate development: “Growth happens on the other side of stress, so we need to stress them.” A first-time in-game playcaller, he has not decided whether he will operate from the coaches’ box or the sideline and will test both during the preseason. Doyle has also focused on cadence—calling it an overlooked element that the offense knows and the defense does not—and has added new shifts and motions to the offense.
