Houston coach DeMeco Ryans told the team’s 2026 draft class at rookie minicamp that the Texans’ culture is already established and that newcomers must acclimate to how the staff operates, the report says. Ryans emphasized teaching the rookies what the culture looks like rather than having to constantly preach it.
The report says that the culture centers on pairing good people with a “SWARM” mantra — special work ethic and relentless mindset — and that Ryans has built the program around those principles. He noted that many young players arrive from different places and systems, so part of the early work is showing them how the Texans do things in Houston.
Per the report, the Texans’ results since Ryans became head coach in 2023 reflect that approach. In that span the team ranks sixth in wins with 32, has recorded three playoff victories tied for fourth most, claimed two AFC South titles and reached the playoffs three times, with each of those seasons ending in the divisional round. The defense has been a hallmark as well, with Houston allowing the fewest yards per game and the second-fewest points in 2025, and ranking fourth in scoring defense over the three seasons, the report says.
The report lists several players who have received individual recognition during Ryans’ tenure, including All-Pro honors for defensive ends and a cornerback, and Pro Bowl selections for a safety, cornerback, linebacker, wide receiver and quarterback, along with other Pro Bowl choices added during his time as coach. Ryans said character is a prerequisite for the roster as the organization tries to build a healthy locker room, and he praised the draft class for those traits.
Ryans singled out first-round pick Keylan Rutledge and second-round picks Kayden McDonald and Marlin Klein, noting their talent and the human qualities they bring to the team. He said the focus for the rookies at minicamp is progression rather than perfection, and Rutledge already showed eagerness to get into pads, according to the report.
