Detroit Tigers vs. Seattle Mariners Odds

Detroit (+145) is the underdog against Seattle (-155) and Vegas has put the Over/Under for this afternoon game at 8.5 runs (-120 for the under and +100 for the over). The game’s current runline odds stand at -150 for taking the Tigers +1.5 runs and +130 for the Mariners -1.5.

The Tigers have gone 20-25 SU this year and are 26-18 against the spread (ATS). They’ve gained 2.2 units for bettors taking the moneyline through the early portions of the season and 4.6 units ATS. Detroit’s covered the spread six times in its last seven games and the total has gone over in five of those seven. The Mariners, on the other hand, are 26-19 SU and 24-20 ATS. They’ve gained 5.0 units for moneyline bettors and 2.5 units ATS. Seattle has covered the spread only twice over its last seven games and the total has gone under in four of those seven.

Mariners games have an over/under record of 26-18 so far in 2018. The Tigers have an over/under record of 20-23-1.

Francisco Liriano will get the nod for the Tigers. The southpaw Liriano is 3-1 with a 4.03 ERA and 32 strikeouts. He has yet to face the Mariners this year and did not record a start against them in 2017, either.

The Mariners are going with lefty Wade LeBlanc (0-0, 2.51 ERA), who has 22 strikeouts and four walks, as well as a 1.05 WHIP. LeBlanc did not record a start against the Tigers in 2017.

As a unit, Seattle’s pitching staff has allowed 4.5 runs per game overall in 2018. The team’s starting pitching staff has an ERA of 4.57, a WHIP of 1.30 and a strikeouts-per-nine of 8.3. The bullpen has a 4.01 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 10.1 K/9.

Seattle’s hitters are putting up 4.6 runs per contest, including 5.0 per game over its last 10 games and 4.8 per game over their last five. The team has slashed .256/.328/.417 over its last five games and is 3-2 SU during that stretch.

Right fielder Mitch Haniger and second baseman Robinson Cano have led the Mariners’ batters so far. Haniger is hitting .291/.372/.552 with 10 home runs, 34 RBIs and 21 runs scored, while Cano is hitting .287 with four homers, 23 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Haniger didn’t do very well against lefty pitching at home last season, slashing .231/.286/.442 over 56 such plate appearances (his total season line was .282/.352/.491).

In the other dugout, Detroit’s pitchers have allowed 4.8 runs per game and its starting pitchers own a 4.34 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 7.25 K/9. The bullpen has managed an ERA of 4.44, along with a K/9 of 8.22.

Tigers hitters have slashed .257/.317/.411 on their way to 4.4 runs scored per game this season, including 4.2 runs per game over the team’s last 10 games and 3.6 per game over the team’s last five outings (2-3 SU).

Detroit’s hitters have been powered by outfielder Nicholas Castellanos and third baseman Jeimer Candelario. Castellanos is slashing .309/.363/.485 with four home runs, 24 RBIs and 22 runs scored, while Candelario (.272/.359/.497) has produced five homers, 16 RBIs and 21 runs scored.

Putting up a slash line of .329/.368/.720 across 87 plate appearances, Castellanos seemed to enjoy hitting lefties on the road last season (compared to his total season line of .272/.320/.490).

The Tigers have gained 4.1 units and are 7-3 ATS when facing a lefty starter this season. The over has hit in seven of those games, compared to three that’ve gone under against left-handed starting pitchers. On the other hand, the Mariners have lost 0.7 units and are 9-7 ATS when facing a left-handed starting pitcher. The over’s hit in seven of those games, as opposed to nine that’ve gone under.
