The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with veteran first baseman Carlos Santana on a one-year contract worth $2 million, according to sources familiar with the deal. The move adds depth and experience to Arizona’s infield ahead of the upcoming MLB season.
Santana, a switch-hitter known for his plate discipline and power, has played in the major leagues since 2010. Over the course of his career, he has been a consistent contributor, amassing over 1,800 hits, more than 300 home runs, and an on-base percentage well above league average. His ability to draw walks and work counts has made him a valuable asset to every lineup he has joined.
The 37-year-old has spent time with multiple teams, including notable stints with the Cleveland Guardians, Philadelphia Phillies, Kansas City Royals, and most recently the Milwaukee Brewers. In the 2023 season, Santana remained productive, contributing both offensively and defensively while also providing veteran leadership in the clubhouse.
For the Diamondbacks, Santana brings a wealth of postseason experience and a veteran presence to a relatively young roster. Arizona, which is building on recent progress and aiming to contend in a competitive National League West, could benefit from Santana’s leadership and ability to mentor younger players.
While at this stage in his career Santana may no longer be in his peak years, his experience and discipline at the plate remain valuable. He also offers flexibility as both a starter and a bench option, capable of starting at first base or serving as a designated hitter when needed under National League rules.
The deal is pending a physical, standard practice for all player signings. Once finalized, Santana is expected to join the team for spring training as he prepares to contribute to his new club. The Diamondbacks continue to shape their roster for the upcoming campaign with an eye on both development and competitiveness.
