The Arizona Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with right-hander Mike Soroka on a one-year contract valued at $7.5 million, according to multiple sources familiar with the deal. Soroka is expected to join the team’s starting rotation for the upcoming season.
Soroka, 26, has worked to reestablish his form following a series of injuries that have impacted his career in recent seasons. He made his Major League debut with the Atlanta Braves in 2018 and quickly emerged as a promising young starter. His breakout season came in 2019, when he finished with a 13-4 record and a 2.68 ERA over 29 starts. That year, he earned an All-Star selection and finished second in National League Rookie of the Year voting while also receiving Cy Young Award consideration.
However, Soroka faced multiple setbacks afterward, most notably suffering two Achilles tendon tears that limited him to just three major league appearances from 2020 through 2022. In 2023, he made a limited return to action but continued to deal with various physical challenges that tempered his performance and availability.
With the addition of Soroka, the Diamondbacks appear to be aiming to bolster their pitching depth as they look to build upon recent success and remain competitive in the National League. Arizona’s rotation already includes emerging arms such as Zac Gallen, Merrill Kelly, and Brandon Pfaadt, and the team is hopeful that Soroka can bring both experience and upside to the mix.
Soroka’s signing reflects the organization’s continued efforts to add value through strategic acquisitions, especially in the pitching department. While his injury history presents some uncertainty, Arizona is optimistic that he can rediscover his pre-injury form and contribute significantly during the upcoming season.
The Diamondbacks are expected to finalize the deal pending a physical, as is customary in such agreements. Further details regarding contract incentives or roster implications were not immediately available.
