The Los Angeles Dodgers have claimed outfielder Mike Siani off waivers from the New York Yankees, the team announced on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, the Dodgers designated infielder Andy Ibáñez for assignment.
Siani, a left-handed hitter and versatile defender, returns to the Dodgers organization after a brief stint with the Yankees. Known for his speed and outfield range, Siani brings additional depth to the Dodgers’ outfield, which already features established players. Siani previously spent time with the Cincinnati Reds and had been part of the Yankees’ roster earlier in the offseason.
Although the 24-year-old has yet to establish himself as a steady presence at the Major League level, his defensive skills and baserunning have earned him attention. He appeared in limited action during his earlier MLB appearances and has played primarily in center field throughout his career.
Ibáñez, a 30-year-old infielder, now faces an uncertain future as he is removed from the Dodgers’ 40-man roster. Players designated for assignment (DFA) can be claimed off waivers by other clubs, traded, or released within a specific period. Ibáñez, who signed with the Dodgers earlier this offseason, had previously played for the Detroit Tigers and Texas Rangers, offering positional flexibility in the infield along with some offensive production.
This transaction may reflect the Dodgers’ continuing efforts to fine-tune their roster during the offseason and provide more defensive options in the outfield. As spring training approaches, clubs often make such roster adjustments to evaluate depth and prepare for potential injuries or performance needs.
Siani’s return gives the Dodgers a chance to further assess his long-term potential within their system. It remains to be seen whether he secures a spot on the Opening Day roster or begins the season with their Triple-A affiliate.
