EPL Power Rankings For Round 5

EPL

The English Premier League power rankings remain the same for the top three as Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea are sitting atop the standings with 10, 10 and nine points, respectively. While the middle teams switch, the lower half teams stay still and there is one new entrant on the list. However, the top teams have midweek action to navigate in the Champions League, and that can affect the Premier League. Here is a look at this week’s EPL power rankings based on how the odds makers see the teams based on their futures to win it all this season.

1. Manchester City

Last Week: 1

EPL Title Odds: +125

City sit in second in the table after a 5-0 demolition of Liverpool at home, which was aided by a Sadio Mane red card after 37 minutes. However, you can only play who is in front of you and City took full advantage of the extra space. Gabriel Jesus and Leroy had two goals apiece, while Sergio Aguero opened the scoring and could have had another, but chose to lay the ball off for Jesus, which is definitely an encouraging sign. The big question is the injury suffered by Ederson when he was kicked in the face by Mane, and whether he can play. Also, City heads to Watford on Saturday, but they’re also at Feyenoord on Wednesday in the Champions League, so that could be a trap game.

2. Manchester United

Last Week: 2

EPL Title Odds: +275

United stays on the top of the table after a 2-2 draw at Stoke City, getting goals from Marcus Rashford (which was a deflection off a Paul Pogba header) and Romelu Lukaku. United should have had more goals, but more importantly, they didn’t defend well at all and they could have lost the game on that end as well. United will also have their depth tested as they host Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday, but they do get an extra day off as they host Everton on Sunday.

3. Chelsea

Last Week: 3

EPL Title Odds: +450

Chelsea defeated Leicester City 2-1 on the road in a game that seemed closed than it actually as Alvaro Morata opened the scoring, then N’Golo Kante notched a goal against his former team. They did allow a penalty in the 62nd minute, but Chelsea had this game wrapped up and managed to stay within distance of the Manchester teams, which has to be their goal this season. Chelsea hosts FK Qarabag in the Champions League on Tuesday, then feature in the marquee game of the weekend as they host Arsenal on Sunday.

4. Tottenham

Last Week: 5

EPL Title Odds: +1000

Spurs are fifth in the table after a 3-0 win at Everton in which they got a pair of goals from Harry Kane, while Christian Eriksen also found the back of the net for Tottenham, who have a few injuries to the likes of Danny Rose, Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko. They also have the Champions League as they host Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday, and then welcome Swansea City on Saturday.

5. Liverpool

Last Week: 4

EPL Title Odds: +1400

Liverpool were dismantled at Manchester City because of Mane’s red card, but they were getting outplayed in the first place. Now, the major question is whether Philippe Coutinho will be back as Liverpool hosts Sevilla on Wednesday, and then they host Burnley on Saturday. Coutinho is available after a back/injury and a transfer saga, but Liverpool needs him now.

6. Arsenal

Last Week: 6

EPL Title Odds: +2500

Arsenal moved to 11th in the table after a 3-0 home win over Bournemouth in which Danny Welbeck scored two goals and Alexandre Lacazette scored once. It was a good bounce-back game for Arsenal, but they still have a lot of problems and they have to host Cologne on Thursday in the Europa League before heading to Chelsea on Sunday. Will Alexis Sanchez be in the lineup for either of those games?

7. Everton

Last Week: 7

EPL Title Odds: +25000

Everton fell 3-0 at home to Tottenham to drop to 16th in the table, and while they’re not a top-six team, they’re certainly better than 16th place. Ross Barkley is now out until November with a hamstring injury and that doesn’t bode well for Everton, who head to Atalanta on Thursday in the Europa League and their squad depth is surely going to be tested. They’re going to have to decide what means more to them: European success or keeping their head above water in England.

8. Leicester

Last Week: 8

EPL Title Odds: +50000

Leicester showed heart in their 2-1 loss to Chelsea, but they’re now 17th in the table and they can’t afford to slide much more. Jamie Vardy scored from the spot in the 62nd minute, but the Chelsea game showed what they’re missing: N’Golo Kante and Danny Drinkwater in midfield, and Drinkwater didn’t even play because he is hurt. At least they don’t have any midweek soccer to deal with, but Leicester still has a tricky trip to Huddersfield Town on Saturday which won’t be an easy match.

9. Huddersfield

Last Week: 9

EPL Title Odds: +75000

Huddersfield dropped to sixth in the table as they fell 2-0 on the road to West Ham, and it was a game that needed to happen. Their players might have been starting to listen to the hype a little that comes with a fast start, but when it boils down to it, most of the Premier League is still better than Huddersfield and they have to work a little bit harder than everyone else to get points. Their home match with Leicester on Saturday is looming large, for both clubs.

10. Watford

Last Week: —

EPL Title Odds: +75000

Watford moves into the rankings as they’re now fourth in the table after Abdoulaye Doucoure and Daryl Janmaat gave them a 2-0 win at Southampton. However, like Huddersfield (but not as much), Watford can’t get ahead of themselves as they’re a middle-of-the-table team if everything breaks right. Still, they have a chance to get a point as they host Manchester City on Saturday; they have to hope that City gets a tough game in the Champions League, and maybe they come to Watford fatigued.
