EPL Fantasy: Recapping Week 2

One week after opening the Premier League season with an impressive win over Arsenal, Liverpool stumbled in a 2-0 loss to a Burnley side that rose to the occasion in order to pull off the upset thanks to an excellent performance from their goalkeeper. Meanwhile, Burnley wasn’t the only club to pull off an upset as Hull City recorded its second consecutive underdog victory with a convincing win over Swansea. Here is a look at the top individual EPL fantasy performance by position from the Premier League this past weekend.

GK: Tom Heaton, Burnley

Heaton turned way all five shots he faced in Burnley’s 2-0 win over Liverpool, as The Clarets bounced back from their season opening loss to Swansea with an impressive victory. Sam Vokes and Andre Gray led the offensive charge by scoring Burnley’s two goals within the first 37 minutes of play but it was Heaton who stole the show with five saves to register the top EPL fantasy score among all goalkeepers this past weekend. Burnley FC is currently tied with four other teams for eighth place in the standings table.

Honorable Mention: Adrian, West Ham United; Lester Schmeichel, Leicester City

D: Curtis Davies, Hull City

Davies played an integral role to Hull’s second consecutive win to open the season, picking up an assist while helping to hold Swansea City to just three shots on target in a 2-0 win. Davis has been extremely impressive as Hull’s best defender over the course of back-to-back wins to open the season and he produced the best EPL fantasy score at his position for week two of the season. Hull City has allowed just one goal so far this season.

Honorable Mention: Luke Shaw, Manchester United; Hector Bellerin, Arsenal; Phil van Aanholt, Sunderland

M: Manuel Agudo Duran, Manchester City

City was the biggest winner over the weekend as they picked up a 4-1 victory over Stoke City thanks to a pair of outstanding individual performances in particular. Nolito made his impact off of the bench with two goals on as many shots in a 10-minute span late in the game to help Manchester City pull away late for their second consecutive win.

M: Shaun Maloney, Hull City

It was Maloney who opened the scoring for Hull City after replacing Adama Diomande as a substitute. Maloney’s goal broke a scoreless draw in the 79th minute with Abel Hernandez adding an insurance marker in the second minute of injury time to seal the 2-0 victory. Hull City currently sits in third place, surprisingly. They are one of four teams that has managed to reap a full six points out of their two games so far this season.

Honorable Mention: Victor Wanyama, Tottenham; Michail Antonio, West Ham; Gareth Barry, Everton

F: Sergio Aguero, Manchester City

Aguero opened the scoring for City on a penalty kick in the 27th minute and then potted the eventual game-winning goal nine minutes later in the 36th minute. His two goals on four shots including the game winner was enough to edge out his competition as the top EPL fantasy forward in the Premier League this week. Manchester City has notched six goals so far this season, which is the most in the league.

F: Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Manchester United

Ibrahimovic continued his strong start to his tenure at United with a pair of goals in a 2-0 win over Southampton on Friday. Ibrahimovic scored twice on three shots attempts and could have had a third goal if Paul Pogba had decided to pass to him when he was wide open at the top of the Southampton box late in the game rather than trying to score on his own. Ibrahamovic now has three goals through his first two Premier League games with United and there is no doubt he is among the biggest reasons for their strong start to the season. Manchester United has now won both of its contests and is tied for first place with six points. They have scored five goals in two games so far, which is the second-most of any team in the EPL.

Honorable Mention: Christhian Stuani, Middlesbrough; Andre Gray, Burnley; Alvaro Negredo, Middlesbrough
