EPL Fantasy: Recapping This Weekend’s Action

Leicester City again highlights our EPL fantasy recap. They continued its unlikely march towards a Premier League title with a close win over Watford over the weekend while relying on a draw between their two closest competitors to open up a little breathing room ahead of the pack. Leicester’s goalkeeper did enough to earn top honors among fantasy goalkeepers this past weekend, but he was the club’s lone representative among the top performers with Riyad Mahrez managing only an honorable mention. Here is a look at the top individual EPL fantasy performers by position from this past weekend.

GK: Kasper Schmeichel, Leicester City

Leicester City’s star goalkeeper has played an integral role in the club’s rise to the top of the Premier League this season and he produced another strong performance in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Watford. Schmeichel made four saves and earned a bonus for the clean sheet as well as the win for top fantasy honors among Premier League goalkeepers once again this past weekend.

Leicester is now five points clear off second place in the EPL standings as they have 60 points while Tottenham is in second place with 55 points. Leicester has allowed just 31 goals through 29 games this season.

Honorable Mention: Adrian, West Ham United; Lukasz Fabianski, Swansea

D: Hector Bellerin, Arsenal

Arsenal’s 20-year-old defender was a big reason why the Gunners was able to salvage a point in their 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Saturday. Bellerin assisted on both Arsenal goals to triple his point total for the season at three assists. The two goals the Gunners conceded hurt his overall point total, but Bellerin still managed to edge out Swansea’s Ashley Williams and Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk as the top EPL fantasy defender of the week from the Premier League. Arsenal, who is in third place in the EPL standings, has allowed 30 goals in 29 games this season.

Honorable Mention: Ashley Williams, Swansea; Virgil van Dijk, Southampton

M: Joshua King, Bournemouth

Bournemouth registered its second-consecutive victory with a 3-1 win over Newcastle United in which King deliver the game-winning goal as well as an additional assist. It was only the third goal of the season for the 24-year-old, but the assist as well as the bonus points for the winner were enough to tie for the top fantasy score among Premier League midfielders from this past weekend. Bournemouth sits in 14th place in the standings but is 11 points clear of the relegation zone as of right now.

M: Dimitri Payet, West Ham

Payet scored the game-winning goal in West Ham’s 3-2 win over Everton and also added an assist to join King in sharing the top fantasy midfielder honors this past weekend. Payet’s team-leading eighth goal of the season was the difference in West Ham’s third win in a row and helped propel them over Manchester United and in to fifth in the Premier League standings.

Honorable Mention: Riyad Mahrez, Leicester City; Yaya Toure, Manchester City; Gylfi Sigurdsson, Swansea

F: Sergio Aguero, Manchester City

Manchester City got back on track with a convincing 4-0 win over Norwich and it was no surprise that Aguero was instrumental in their attack once again. Aguero scored twice and very well should have had a third, but missed his penalty kick attempt off the bar. Aguero was docked a point for the missed penalty, but still finished with the best fantasy stat line among Premier League forwards.

F: Mame Biram Diouf, Stoke City

Stoke City earned another important point and ran its undefeated streak to four straight games with a 1-1 draw with Chelsea thanks to Diouf’s fourth goal of the season. Chelsea appeared well on its way to victory before Diouf finally broke through with the tying goal in the 85th minute, keeping Stoke three points clear of the Blues in the table. Stoke City has scored just 31 goals this season in 29 games, which is the fewest of any team in the top 10 of the EPL standings. They’re a bit of a dicey proposition in terms of EPL fantasy on a weekly basis.

Honorable Mention: Diafra Sakho, West Ham; Salomon Rondon, West Brom; Christian Benteke, Liverpool
