EPL Fantasy: Week 36 Recap

Leicester City’s Cinderella season continued when they moved one point closer to completing the most unlikely of Premier League title runs with a 1-1 draw against Manchester United. Leicester remains in control of its own destiny as they need just one point over its final two games versus Everton and Chelsea to be crowned champions and while they dominated the headlines for all of the obvious reasons this past weekend it was a completely different crop of players that were making the difference in fantasy competitions. Here is a look at the top individual EPL fantasy performances by position from this past weekend.

GK: Karl Darlow, Newcastle

While Leicester City has continued its push towards a Premier League title at the top of the table it has been Newcastle that has climbed above the relegation line thanks to a strong run of its own with a point in four straight games. Darlow stood tall for Newcastle in an important 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday as he made three saves to preserve the clean sheet victory and produce the best fantasy score at his position.

Honorable Mention: Petr Cech, Arsenal; Adrian, West Ham United

D: Leighton Baines, Everton

Everton ended its winless drought with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth thanks in big part to their top defender Baines, who deliver an impressive performance including the game-winning goal. After a pair of goals in the opening 10 minutes the game remained tied at 1-1 until the 64th minute when Baines broke through and scored the eventual winner.

Honorable Mention: Nacho Monreal, Arsenal; Wes Morgan, Leicester City; Ciaran Clark, Aston Villa

M: Sadio Mane, Southampton

Southampton was among the big winners this past weekend with a 4-2 victory over a Manchester City side that clearly appeared to be saving its best for the Champions League. Mane delivered in a major way with three goals on five shots and was clearly the best EPL fantasy player from the Premier League this past weekend regardless of position. Mane is up to 10 goals and six assists in 35 games this season and his offensive outburst on Sunday clearly marked the high point of his campaign.

M: Mark Noble, West Ham

West Ham was another team that produced a lopsided victory as the earned a 3-0 win over West Brom on Saturday. Noble was their biggest star with a pair of goals and three shots to edge out Swansa’s Andre Ayew and Everton’s Tom Cleverley for the second-best fantasy score at his position over the weekend. West Ham now sits in sixth place in the EPL standings with 59 points in 35 games.

Honorable Mention: Andre Ayew, Swansea; Tom Cleverley, Everton; Cheikhou Kouyate, West Ham United

F: Troy Deeney, Watford

Watford had the good fortunate of an opportunity to add to Aston Villa’s misery over the weekend and they delivered with a 3-2 win. Deeney was the star up front for the home side as he scored two goals with six shots in total to secure the three points. Watford has had trouble scoring, which is why they haven’t been a solid source in EPL fantasy this season. They have tallied just 36 goals in 35 games this year. Only two teams in the entire Premier League have scored less than them.

F: Kelechi Iheanacho, Manchester City

The majority of experts including City manager Manuel Pellegrini expected his lineup to be able to secure three points versus Southampton this past weekend and while they fell short to Southampton, Iheanacho still starred at the offensive end of the pitch. Iheanacho scored twice with three shots to raise his season totals to seven goals and 20 shots in 24 games and produce the second-best fantasy score at his position in the Premier League over the weekend. City now sits in fourth place in the EPL standings, but they have been one of the best outfits for EPL fantasy purposes. They have scored a league-high 38 goals so far this season in 36 games, which is almost a two-per-game clip.

Honorable Mention: Anthony Martial, Manchester United; Jermain Defoe, Sunderland; Danny Welbeck, Arsenal
