EPL Recap: The Top Fantasy Performances In Week 31

A wild weekend in the Premier League wrapped up with Manchester United taking down rival Manchester City, Southampton outscoring Liverpool and Tottenham coming through with a big win that pushed them back within five points of Leicester City at the top of the table. Who were the biggest winners from a fantasy perspective? Here is a look at the top fantasy performances by position in the Premier League from this past weekend.

GK: David de Gea, Manchester United

Manchester United rebounded from a tough loss to West Ham United with a big win over their Manchester rivals thanks in big part to the performance of their star goalkeeper. David de Gea stopped all three of City’s shots on target to help preserve the 1-0 win and the bonus points for the clean sheet victory helped put him over the top as the top player at his position this past weekend. Manchester United has now giving up just 27 goals in 30 games this season, which is the second-fewest in the EPL.

Honorable Mention: David Ospina, Arsenal; Kasper Schmeichel, Leicester City

D: Federico Fernandez, Swansea

Swansea City secured its third win in four games with a 1-0 victory over Aston Villa. They are now up to 15th place in the standings with 36 points. Fernandez was the hero for the home side in that game as he helped propel the victory. He stepped up big time with the lone goal in the win and that was more than enough to make him the top fantasy defender for this past weekend ahead of Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin and Tottenham’s Kyle Walker.

Honorable Mention: Hector Bellerin, Arsenal; Kyle Walker, Tottenham; Christian Fuchs, Leicester City

M: Cesc Fabregas, Chelsea

The defending Premier League champs won’t challenge for a title this season, but they have climbed in to the top 10 in the table thanks to a strong run over the past couple of months. Fabregas played the role of hero for the Blues on Saturday with a pair of goals in a 2-2 draw with West Ham United to edge out his fellow midfielders for the top performance at his position this past weekend. Chelsea now has 10 wins, 11 draws and nine losses on the season. They have scored 45 goals in 30 games.

M: Jonathan Walters, Stoke City

Stoke City broke through with its first win in three games thanks in big part to Walters, who was in on both of his team’s goals in a 2-1 win over Watford. Walters opened the scoring for Stoke City in the 18th minute and then assisted on the eventual game-winning goal by Joselu in the 51st minute to seal the deal on an important three points. Stoke City is now sitting in eighth place with 46 points.

Honorable Mention: Sadio Mane, Southampton; Robbie Brady, Norwich; Riyad Mahrez, Leicester City

F: Harry Kane, Tottenham

One day after Leicester City extended its lead atop the table to eight points, Tottenham responded with a big win over Crystal Palace that cut their lead right back down to five points thanks in big part to their top scorer. Harry Kane opened the scoring for Hotspur in the opening minute and then added another marker in the 16th minute to put his side in the driver seat. He wasn’t done there though as he assisted on Christian Eriksen’s goal in the 52nd minute to seal a 3-0 win over Bournemouth and lock himself in as the top fantasy performer of the week in the Premier League regardless of position. Tottenham is still five points back of first place Leicester City and has scored a league-best 56 goals in 31 games this season.

F: Graziano Pelle, Southampton

Pelle would have been the top fantasy forward in most weeks, but an incredible performance by Kane kept him to the second-best fantasy score this past weekend. Pelle scored the tying goal in the 83rd minute and then recorded his second assist and third point of the game on Sadio Mane’s winner in the 86th minute of a 3-2 win over Liverpool.

Honorable Mention: Danny Welbeck, Arsenal; Jose Luis Mato Sanmartin, Stoke City; Jermain Defoe, Stoke City
