Erling Haaland’s Difficult Run Raises Questions for Man City Attack

Erling Haaland has built a reputation as one of the most decisive forwards in world football, particularly in the Premier League with Manchester City. His record against many opponents, including West Ham United, has often underlined his scoring instinct and ability to dominate in and around the penalty area. On this occasion, however, in a match where Manchester City badly needed three points to keep their title ambitions on track, Haaland struggled to make an impact.

Across the 90 minutes, the Norway international registered only 21 touches, a notably low figure for the focal point of City’s attack. For long stretches he was on the periphery of the game, finding limited space and receiving the ball infrequently in dangerous positions. West Ham’s defensive structure kept him under close attention, cutting off passing lanes from City’s creative players and forcing him to drop deeper or drift wide in search of involvement.

When Haaland did get on the ball, there was little opportunity to turn and attack goal as he normally does. Manchester City’s usual fluidity in the final third appeared disrupted, with the team circulating possession without consistently finding their centre-forward in advantageous areas. Crosses into the box were often crowded out, and through-balls were either overhit or intercepted before reaching him.

This quiet display adds to a recent sequence of performances in which Haaland has not been as prolific or as influential as in previous stretches of his City career. The team has come to rely on his finishing to turn dominance of possession into goals, and when he is contained, the attack can look less threatening despite strong build-up play.

Whether this constitutes a true slump or a short-term dip in form is open to interpretation, but the timing is significant. City entered the fixture needing a victory to keep maximum pressure on their rivals in the title race. Failure to secure the result has invited scrutiny of both the team’s overall attacking approach and Haaland’s current rhythm in front of goal.

What is clear is that Manchester City’s system is designed with Haaland as a central figure. When he is heavily involved, making frequent penalty-box runs and occupying defenders, the team often finds more space for its midfielders and wingers to exploit. When he is limited to so few touches, as against West Ham, the attack can become more predictable and easier to defend.

City’s coaching staff will now look to adjust, whether by altering Haaland’s positioning, encouraging more varied service into the box, or rotating personnel around him to create different angles and combinations. Haaland, for his part, has repeatedly shown the capacity to respond strongly after quieter spells, using his movement, physical presence, and clinical finishing to reassert himself on matches.

The coming fixtures will reveal whether this subdued performance is an outlier or part of a longer pattern. For a club competing for major trophies, small margins often decide the outcome of a season. Ensuring that Haaland is fully integrated and regularly involved in the attacking play will be a central focus as City continue their push in the league and other competitions.
