ESPN’s NBA insiders project the New York Knicks will sit atop a deep Eastern Conference, with the Detroit Pistons close behind, according to ESPN. The forecast lists the top five as: New York (53-29), Detroit (53-29), Cleveland (51-31), Philadelphia (50-32) and Boston (48-34).
ESPN notes the Knicks return every major contributor aside from center Mitchell Robinson. The projection describes the conference’s top tier as tightly contested, saying each of the forecast’s top four teams can point to talent, continuity or a combination of both as reasons it could lead the East at season’s end.
The Pistons enter the season after a 60-win campaign and largely relied on internal improvement, with their biggest offseason move a swap that brought in John Collins while veteran Tobias Harris signed with the Spurs, ESPN reports. Cleveland hopes a full season from the Donovan Mitchell–James Harden backcourt and the addition of two-way wing Peyton Watson will fuel another deep run.
Philadelphia’s roster change included acquiring Jaylen Brown and signing LeBron James, a move ESPN called the conference’s largest infusion of talent since James’ second Cleveland stint. The projection cautioned that health and cohesion are concerns for the 76ers even as it labeled Philadelphia the East team with the most upside. Boston is banking on a full season from Jayson Tatum, who played 16 games last season after returning from an Achilles tear, and on Paul George maintaining his availability for coach Joe Mazzulla.
The play-in group is projected to include the Atlanta Hawks (47-35), Miami Heat (47-35), Toronto Raptors (45-37), Indiana Pacers (44-38) and Orlando Magic (44-38), according to ESPN. The report highlights Miami’s acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Toronto’s pending acquisition of Kawhi Leonard, notes Tyrese Haliburton’s return for Indiana after a torn Achilles, and adds that the Western Conference remains home to contenders such as the Oklahoma City Thunder, San Antonio Spurs and Denver Nuggets — teams that, ESPN says, boast five of the past six MVPs and reigning Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama.
