Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath has officially joined Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls, completing a transfer from Cardiff City, a club that currently competes in England’s third tier. The Red Bulls announced the signing on Thursday, confirming that Horvath has agreed to a one-and-a-half-season contract. The deal includes team options that could extend his stay through the 2027-28 and 2028-29 seasons.
The move marks a return to the United States for the 28-year-old goalkeeper, who has spent the majority of his professional career in Europe. Horvath began his career with Molde FK in Norway before moving to Belgian side Club Brugge. He later signed with Nottingham Forest in England, where he was part of the squad that earned promotion to the Premier League in the 2021-22 season. Most recently, he had been with Cardiff City.
At the international level, Horvath has been capped by the United States Men’s National Team, with appearances in key tournaments such as the CONCACAF Nations League. He gained attention for his performance in the 2021 Nations League final against Mexico, where he came off the bench to make several crucial saves and help secure the win for the U.S.
Horvath’s arrival adds depth and experience to the Red Bulls’ goalkeeping unit, which will aim to build on its defensive foundation in the upcoming MLS season. The club will look to integrate Horvath quickly into their system as pre-season preparations continue.
Sporting Director Denis Hamlett expressed enthusiasm about the signing, noting the leadership and international experience Horvath brings to the squad. The Red Bulls hope that his background in top-level European competition and his time with the national team will be valuable assets in the club’s ambition to contend in the Eastern Conference.
Horvath’s addition is expected to be a significant boost for the Red Bulls as they aim to strengthen their roster heading into the new campaign.
