As the 2025-26 NHL season progresses, it’s time to revisit the bold predictions made for each of the league’s 32 teams before the puck dropped in September. While some projections have proven surprisingly accurate, others have missed the mark by a considerable margin. Here’s a comprehensive evaluation of how those early forecasts are holding up across the NHL.

Many preseason predictions centered around young stars breaking out, team turnarounds, surprising playoff contenders, and record-setting performances. So far, teams like the Vancouver Canucks and Detroit Red Wings have exceeded expectations, largely due to emerging talents and improved depth. The Canucks’ top line has been especially productive, while the Red Wings have found momentum behind strong goaltending and key acquisitions.

In contrast, some teams haven’t lived up to early optimism. The Calgary Flames, picked by some to make a serious playoff run, have struggled with consistency, as has their power-play efficiency. Meanwhile, projections of a bounce-back season for the Columbus Blue Jackets now appear overly optimistic, given the team’s continued issues defensively and behind the bench.

Individual player predictions also have shown mixed results. Several NHL analysts anticipated Boston Bruins’ forward David Pastrnak continuing his scoring surge, and he has done just that, ranking among the league leaders in goals. Conversely, high expectations for a major leap by Alexis Lafrenière in New York haven’t fully materialized, although there’s still time for progression.

Milestone predictions have also come into play as veterans chase career benchmarks. Washington Capitals superstar Alex Ovechkin continues his pursuit of the all-time goals record, staying on a pace that keeps him within reach. Meanwhile, Sidney Crosby and Anze Kopitar maintain consistent production as they quietly climb the all-time points list.

Not every bold preseason statement can be accurate, but reviewing these predictions offers insights into how the current NHL season is unfolding. It also reflects the dynamic nature of the league, where team chemistry, injuries, and breakout performances can quickly alter expectations. As the season moves forward, it will be interesting to see which forecasts hold true and which become cautionary tales of preseason overconfidence.
