Figueroa Jr vs Guerrero Headline PBC on FOX

Figueroa Jr vs Guerrero Headline PBC on FOX – The Premier Boxing Champions are at New York’s Nassau Coliseum with a big ten-fight boxing card this Saturday night, July 15th, that will see the main events air on FOX.

For the last few fights, veteran former world champion Robert Guerrero has been fighting under the PBC banner. He has taken losses to top guns Danny Garcia and Keith Thurman and here the PBC is asking him to be a gate keeper once again. Omar Figueroa Jr is unbeaten at 26-0-1 and he has some good names on his resume already, but a win over Guerrero would put him clearly in title contention. Guerrero is now 34 years old and he has cashed in some solid paydays already. That is what he is here to do in this one. Guerrero is smart enough to know that he needs a win in order to break out of a slump that has seen him go 2-4 in his last six fights.

The co-feature sees New Yorkers clash in the light heavyweight division as Sean Monaghan (28-0) faces off against Marcus Browne (19-0). Monaghan has built up a big record fighting mainly club level competition in his native Long Island and he has been used by several promoters as a ticket seller in the metropolitan New York area. Browne is out of Staten Island and he represented the United States at the 2012 Olympic games in London. The entire 2012 Olympic team as a failure however many of the fighters have gone on to stand-out pro careers and several have captured world championships already. Browne is favored to remain undefeated as he tries to follow in the footsteps of Errol Spence Jr, Raushee Warren and other 2012 Olympians who have secured world titles.

A ten-round heavyweight fight figures to entertain as local product Adam Kownacki takes on Artur Szpilka in ten round action. Kownacki brings a 15-0 record to the match-up but he will be the underdog to the more experienced Szpilka. We last saw Szpika, who uses the nickname “The Pin,” eighteen months ago when he lost to Deontay Wilder in a failed bid to win the WBC world heavyweight title. Szpika was carried out on a stretcher after that fight so he has questions heading into this return. Despite all that Szpika will be favored over Kownacki, whose resume marks this as his first bout scheduled for ten rounds.

The venerable Nassau Coliseum on Long Island has not hosted a big-time boxing card since the middle of the 1980’s. The last boxing event at the 18,000 seat arena that is home to hockey’s Islanders was on March 10th, 1986 when a young heavyweight by the name of Mike Tyson moved to 19-0 with a third round stoppage of Steve Zouski. For bringing boxing back to the Nassau Coliseum after thirty years, the PBC deserves major credit.
