Former UFC heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou has voiced his support for Tom Aspinall following Aspinall’s withdrawal from his title defense against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 due to an eye-poke. The incident occurred during the early stages of the bout in a highly anticipated heavyweight clash.
Aspinall, who captured the interim heavyweight title after a string of impressive performances, was scheduled to defend his belt against former interim champion Gane. However, the bout was brought to a halt when Aspinall was accidentally poked in the eye, impairing his vision and leaving him unable to continue. UFC officials subsequently ruled the contest a no-contest due to the accidental nature of the foul.
In the aftermath, Aspinall faced criticism from some fans and pundits questioning whether the injury warranted ending the bout. Addressing the situation, Ngannou, now competing under the Professional Fighters League (PFL) banner, expressed his support for Aspinall and emphasized the seriousness of eye injuries in mixed martial arts.
Speaking to reporters, Ngannou said that fighters often push through pain, but vision impairment presents a significant safety concern. “There are things a fighter can fight through, but when it comes to not being able to see, it’s not only dangerous for the opponent but also for yourself,” Ngannou stated. “You have to be smart and protect your health.”
This marks another unusual development in the UFC’s heavyweight division, which has seen multiple title fights affected by injuries and unforeseen events in recent years. Aspinall’s status for a potential rescheduled bout or next opponent remains uncertain, as medical evaluations are ongoing.
UFC president Dana White has yet to comment publicly on the potential for a rematch between Aspinall and Gane. Depending on the severity of the injury, the organization may consider scheduling the fight again or exploring other matchups in the division.
With the title picture now in flux, Ngannou’s comments reflect growing concern within the fighter community for long-term health, particularly regarding eye injuries, which can have lasting effects. For now, Aspinall continues to receive support from fellow fighters and remains one of the top contenders in the heavyweight division.
