Fury vs Klitschko 2 Canc. – Talk’n’Shoot Podcast #22

Fury vs Klitschko 2 Cancelled – The Talk’n’Shoot Boxing Podcast is back with it’s 22nd edition, and the main subject of the podcast is the recently announced cancellation of the October 29th world heavyweight title re-match between Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko.

Fury famously captured a slew of world title belts from Klitschko in November of last year, and the re-match has been in the works ever since. The match was originally talked about for the April time frame, and it was eventually put on the books for July, but Fury suffered a sprained ankle while doing roadwork that led to the postponement of the fight until October 29th. Now word is that Fury is suffering from “depression” and he has pulled out of this fight as well.

The cancellation puts the heavyweight division into turmoil. IBF world champion Anthony Joshua will benefit from Fury’s fall and there is already talk of the young champion stepping up and filling in for Fury against Klitschko. This weekend, Joseph Parker (20-0) meets Alexander Dimitrenko (38-2) in New Zealand for an IBF title qualifier that will leave the winner in a spot to challenge Joshua.

Joshua promoter Eddie Hearn has been talking about matching Joshua with Parker, but the sudden availability of Klitschko means things are getting interesting in England. Klitschko is now 40 years old and as a long-time champion he deserves a title match should he choose to return.

As for Fury, everything is up in the air. At 27 years old, he would appear to be heading into his prime and in failing to fight Klitschko he is losing out on a major payday. Though his camp has put out word that his condition will not lead him to be stripped, that has to be considered as a very real possibility as it is not clear how much time and recovery will be involved before Fury is fighting fit again. Rather than face Joshua, Klitschko could push to face a mandatory opponent for the titles that Fury vacates if it comes to that.

Do not miss the latest edition of the Talk’n’Shoot Boxing Podcast. Suffice it to say that the heavyweight division’s state is in flux and more developments are expected shortly.

Fury vs Klitschko 2 Cancelled

Also discussed on the TnS Podcast is the recent Jorge Linares versus Anthony Crolla WBA world lightweight title fight that went down in in England on September 24th. In that bout, the former 3 weight class world champion Jorge Linares, went to Crolla’s hometown and put on a clinic of speed and technique over Crolla, to go home with the belt.

Finally, the first set of numbers are floating around out there for pay-per-view sales for the big September 17.
HBO fight between Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Liam Smith and the numbers are not good. The first cut of #s is coming in between 290k and 310k, which is less than half of what Alvarez was able to pull last May when he faced Amir Khan. This number is likely a far cry from what HBO was expecting, and we look at how the cable giant has been operating during what is turning out to be a down year for boxing.
