GERMAN BUNDESLIGA – Two Match Preview (Round 5)

Bundesliga

Here we have prepared for you the two-match analysis of the upcoming German Bundesliga week 5 matchups that will take place during this midweek in Mainz and Hamburg between home teams and their opponents from Sinsheim and Dortmund.

Another doubleheader is ready as we continue to check out this midweek round of German Bundesliga. The first matchup features Mainz and Hoffenheim, squads that haven’t been especially successful last week as Hoffenheim recorded a 1:1 home draw against Hertha and Mainz got torpedoed by Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena, 4:0. The second matchup features Hamburger SV who recorded a 2:0 road loss against the newcomers Hannover 96 team, while Borussia Dortmund destroyed the worst team in the league so far, FC Koln, 5:0.

It’s time to win some money at the bookie so let’s take a closer look.

FSV Mainz 05 vs. TSG Hoffenheim 1899

Three-Way: 1: 1. FSV Mainz 05 +185; X: +262 Draw; 2: TSG Hoffenheim 1899 +179

Spread 0: 1: FSV Mainz 05 -104; TSG Hoffenheim 1899 +100

Total +2.5: Over -122; Under +120

FSV MAINZ 05

The Mainz team season is black and white so far, with the black prevailing a bit at the moment. They have no draws recorded but they have one win (3:1 home victory against Leverkusen) and three defeats so far. The season opener was an unsuccessful 0:1 home loss against Hannover while both visiting matchups went the other way with no goals scored and five goals conceded.

The team currently ranks at the No. 15 spot in the Bundesliga table with three total points earned so far, just above the relegation line. Their goal difference 3-7 (3-2 in front of their own crowd) and overall, the team’s fans and management is not happy with the way this season has started but there is still enough place for the improvement. Y. Muto, A. Diallo, and S. Serdar are the only three players that got themselves on the scoreboard so far.

Niko Bungert (thigh), Daniel Brosinski (unknown), Abdou Diallo (back), Philipp Klement (thigh) and Marin Sverko (knee) are all listed as doubtful for Wednesday while Karim Onisiwo’s (rib) status is unknown. Aaron Seydel (knee) is day to day while Kenan Kodro (ankle), Emil Berggreen (muscle), Jannik Huth (knee), Alexander Hack (ankle) and Gaetan Bussman (groin) are all back in training.

TSG HOFFENHEIM 1899

The Blues from Sinsheim are still undefeated in the German Bundesliga this season. There are currently ranked at No. 5 spot in the league table with a 2-2-0 record and eight total points earned. Their total goal difference is 6-3 (2-2 on the road). When we look at the opponents Hoffenheim has faced in first four rounds we can say that they’ve had a pretty tough schedule but the fact that they played three of those four matchups at home nullifies a bit that statement.

They recorded two wins at home (1:0 season opener against Werder Bremen and comfortable 2:0 win over defending champions Bayern Munich in round three). The only home draw came against Hertha Berlin last weekend (1:1). Mark Uth is the team’s leading scorer so far with three goals (two against Bayern) while Andrej Kramaric has two goals in his account so far.

Ermin Bicakcic (knee) and Serge Gnabry (ankle) are listed as doubtful for Wednesday while Stefan Posch (ankle) is day to day and it’s unclear if he will available tomorrow.

FSV Mainz 05 vs. TSG Hoffenheim 1899 – Match Prediction

The visitors are obviously a bit stronger team at the moment but we must tread carefully still because they played only one road game this season (2:2 draw at Leverkusen) and they proved to be the much more dangerous opponent when playing at home. I would go here for over 2.5 goals in total as my first guess and a draw as an additional pick.

My pick: Over 2.5 goals (-122)

Additional Pick: Draw (+262)

Hamburger SV vs. Dortmund

Three-Way: 1: Hamburger SV +680; X: +409 Draw; 2: Dortmund -182

Spread +1.5: Hamburger SV -127; Dortmund +140

Total +3: Over -105; Under +100

 HAMBURGER SV

After two initial wins against FC Augsburg at home (1:0) and FC Koln on the road (3:1) the “Red Shorts” managed to record two consecutive defeats with four goals conceded and no goals scored. The home defeat against RB Leipzig two weeks ago obviously shook the teams’ confidence making them a no-match for Hannover 96 team that plays rejuvenated. The northerners are currently ranked at No. 8 spot in the league table with six total points earned and a 4-5 goal difference (1-2 at home).

Four Hamburg’s players managed to get themselves on the scoreboard so far with one goal each (N. Muller, A. Hahn, B. Wood and L. Holtby). Against Dortmund, head coach Markus Gisdol is facing the fact that eight players are on the injury list and will not be in the circulation for this big test on Wednesday.

Filip Kostic (thigh) and Aaron Hunt (thigh) are set to be back next month while Nicolai Muller (cruciate ligament) will not see any action until late February next year. Boby Shou Wood (knee) is doubtful while Rick Van Drongelen’s (groin) and mats Kohlert’s (muscle) status is unknown. Pierre-Michael Lasogga (thigh) is listed as day to day.

DORTMUND

The Borussia Dortmund team is dominating in the GermaBundesligaga so far with 3-1-0 record and ten points earned so far, putting them on the top spot of the Bundesliga caravan. They haven’t yet conceded a goal while scoring 10. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is the team’s top scorer with four goals so far while M. Philipp managed to get himself on the scoreboard twice. Four more guys scored at least one goal (C. Pulisic, M. Bartra, N. Sahin and S. Papastathopoulos). On the other side, the play in the UEFA Champions League didn’t go well as planned as they recorded a defeat against English side Totenham Hotspur on the road, 3:1.

For the pessimists, the only reason for the yellow-blacks being at the first place in the German Bundesliga table is the fact that they haven’t faced any strong opponents so far. Nevertheless, the right tests are coming Dortmund’s way and we will soon find out if the team is for real this season. The matchup against Freiburg on the road in round three can also be pointed by those who are not expecting from Dortmund to be the contender for the title this year, because the match ended 0:0 even though Freiburg played with one player less for the majority of the game.

Marcel Shmelzer (ankle), Hendrik Bonmann (knee) and Raphael Guereiro (foot) are all listed to be back at the end of the enxt month while Marco Reus (cruciate ligament) should be back in late November. Jeremy Toljan (thigh) should be available in few days while Sebastian Rode’s (groin) and Eric Durm’s (hip) status is unknown. Andre Schurle (thigh) is day to day while Marc Bartra (groins) is listed as doubtful.

Hamburger SV vs. Dortmund – Match Prediction

This is a one more matchup with high-scoring potential that deflects the overall expectations of this midweek round as a low-scoring one. Also, at least one goal scored by both teams look like a good possibility.

My pick: Over 3 goals (-105)

Additional pick: Both teams score YES (-137)
