New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo issued a public apology Saturday for remarks he made about chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) and asthma during a recent podcast appearance.

Skattebo’s comments, which drew criticism after the episode circulated on social media, were described by the player himself as a “tasteless joke.” While specific details of the exchange were not widely published, his remarks were perceived by some listeners as making light of serious medical conditions that affect current and former athletes as well as the broader public.

In his statement of apology, Skattebo acknowledged that his attempt at humor was inappropriate and insensitive. He expressed regret for the way his words were received and recognized that discussing CTE and asthma in a joking manner was hurtful to individuals and families who live with the realities of those conditions. He emphasized that he did not intend to diminish the significance of player safety, brain health, or respiratory illness.

CTE, a degenerative brain disease associated with repeated head impacts, has been a central topic in and around football over the past decade. It has prompted changes in league protocols, equipment standards, and approach to player safety at all levels of the sport. Asthma, a chronic respiratory condition, also affects a number of athletes and has long been a consideration in training and medical management for teams.

In apologizing, Skattebo indicated an understanding that public figures, particularly professional athletes, are held to a standard in how they discuss health and safety issues. He noted that his comments did not reflect the respect he has for teammates, opponents, and others who may be affected by these conditions.

The Giants organization did not immediately release a detailed public statement regarding the situation, and no disciplinary measures were announced in connection with Skattebo’s remarks. The apology appears aimed at moving forward while acknowledging the impact of his words.

Skattebo, an NFL newcomer working to establish himself with the Giants, now returns his focus to football with the incident serving as an early lesson in the scrutiny that can accompany off-field comments in the modern media landscape.
