GIRONA

The White and Reds are playing their first ever La Liga campaign, having a great time so far, as they are sitting at the 10th spot of the La Liga table after the first 13 rounds with 17 points, a 16:19 goal difference and a 4-5-4 record, four points behind Villarreal in the sixth spot, and nine points above the relegation zone. Girona is undefeated for five games in a row, recording three wins and two draws in the process with a 9:6 goal difference, including a massive 2:1 victory over Real Madrid at home in the tenth round.

On the home soil, Girona has recorded two wins, two draws, and three losses with a 7:10 goal difference, while on the road they have recorded two victories, three draws, and just one defeat (against Athletic Bilbao in the third round) with a 9:9 goal difference. Girona is playing an attacking football and they’ve managed to score at least one goal in the previous seven La Liga matches, while they’ve managed to score at least two goals in the last four games away from home. On the other side, in each of their last eight matches, Girona conceded at least a goal, while they couldn’t keep their net intact at home for five games in a row.

In the previous round of the Spanish La Liga, Girona earned a 2:2 draw against Betis at Benito Villamarin, even they had a lead two times after Portu’s goals. In the first 45 minutes, Girona was a better rival, creating a couple of good chances before Portu took advantage of Alin Tosca’s mistake to score his first goal of the match in the dying moments of the first half. Girona was really close to double their lead in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but Cristhian Stuani and Pablo Maffeo couldn’t find the net. In the 85th minute, Andres Guardado leveled the match with a beautiful shot from a free-kick, and when everyone thought it was the end of the game, the real drama began in the injury time. First, Portu scored his second goal of the game four minutes in the stoppage time, but immediately after the kick-off, Riza Durmisi found Cristian Tello on the edge of the box who somehow dribbled past the defender and put the ball behind Bono’s back for a total delirium at Benito Villamarin.

The 25-year old attacking midfielder Portu had a tremendous game against Betis, and he is the team’s second-best scorer with five goals in 13 appearances, while the 31-year old striker Cristhian Stuani is the scoring leader with seven goals in 11 La Liga matches this season. The 29-year old midfielder Alex Granell and the 24-year old forward Olarenwaju Kayode are the team’s best assist-makers with two dishes apiece, while seven other players made one assist each thus far.

The manager Pablo Machin will miss Alex Granell for the next game with Alaves due to a yellow card suspension, while Olarenwaju Kayode (wound), the centre-back Pedro Alcala (ankle injury), the midfielder Pere Pons (hamstring injury), the right-back Pablo Maffeo (concussion), and a left-back Carles Planas (nose injury) are all listed as a doubtful.

ALAVES

Alaves is in all kind of troubles after the first 13 rounds of the Spanish La Liga, as they are sitting at the bottom of the table with six points, a 7:22 goal difference, and a 2-0-11 record, six points behind Deportivo La Coruna in the safe 17th spot. Alaves’ board sacked Gianni De Biasi after a 2:1 defeat against Eibar at home last weekend, and they hired a former Spanish international Abelardo Fernandez as their new manager, third this season. The Glorious One was beaten five times in the previous six La Liga matches, scoring four goals in the process and conceding 12 in a return.

At home, Alaves has recorded one victory and six losses with a 4:13 goal difference, while on the road they have won one game along with five defeats and a 3:9 goal difference. They have serious problems in the final third, as they are the most inefficient team in the La Liga with seven goals on the account, creating just seven scoring chances per game thus far. Alaves had a ball on their feet for 43% of the time per game, while 43% of their shots went on target. On the other end, they had a couple of decent defensive performance this season, recording 40 defensive actions per match, but they won just 35% of tackles so far, and on a few occasions their marking was pretty poor.

In the previous round of the Spanish La Liga, Alaves was beaten by Eibar at home, 1:2, having another bad day at the back, while Christian Santos was sent-off in the 45th minute. They were two goals down after Charles’ goal in the 69th minute, and Burgui just softened the defeat in the injury time of the second half. On last Thursday, Alaves qualified for the Spanish Copa del Rey Round of 16 after hammering Getafe at home, 3:0, and it could be a huge boost before they face Girona on Monday evening.

The 29-year old striker Christian Santos is the team’s leading scorer with two goals in seven La Liga appearances, while five other players bagged one goal each thus far. The 28-year old winger Ibai Gomez and a 22-year old forward Munir El Haddadi are the team’s best assist-makers with two dishes apiece, while Munir El Haddadi scored one goal in 11 matches so far. The 27-year old forward Bojan Krkic, who’s playing on loan from Stoke City, is still goalless in six La Liga games this season.

The new manager Abelardo Fernandez is having some serious problems to pick up the starting eleven for the next match against Girona, as Christian Santos, the midfielder Manu Garcia, and a centre-back Rodrigo Ely are all suspended, while defenders Hector Hernandez (malleolar injury), Alexis (wound), and Carlos Vigaray (knee problems) are all doubtful.

GIRONA vs. ALAVES – Match Prediction

Girona is a favorite in this one, but I’m sure Alaves’ players have a huge motive to prove themselves to the new manager. Therefore, I think the visitors could stay undefeated in this one, while they are still without a draw this season.
