Golden State Warriors to win the Pacific Division: -10000

Golden State Warriors to win the Western Conference: -300

Golden State Warriors to win the NBA Championship: -185

Golden State Warriors Season Total Win Prediction: Total 67.5 (Over -125, Under -105)

The Golden State Warriors won the NBA Championship last year in style as they recorded 67 wins and ended at the top of the Western Conference, with six victories ahead of the San Antonio Spurs. The Warriors lost only one game in the playoffs, and that was in the NBA Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers. Golden State got their revenge for the defeat in 2015/16 season when they led 3-1 in the Finals but eventually fell short to the Cavs.

Acquisition of Kevin Durant proved to be the right choice for the Warriors as he, Steph Curry, and Klay Thompson looked unstoppable for the biggest part of the season, while Draymond Green’s defensive heroics were out of this world. Golden State managed to keep the key players and tie them with new contracts, while they also brought some new faces, so they even seem stronger than in 2016/17. It is always harder to defend the title than to win it, but the Warriors are in fantastic position to do that, and it is no surprise why are they the biggest favorites to clinch another trophy.

The 2017/2018 Golden State Warriors Roster

Arrivals: Omri Casspi, Nick Young, Jordan Bell, Chris Boucher.

Departures: Matt Barnes, James Michael McAdoo.

The Warriors didn’t have any picks in the 2017 NBA Draft, but they did get Jordan Bell in a trade with the Chicago Bulls. The 22-year-old power forward played for the Oregon Ducks from 2014 to 2017 and he is expected to serve as a backup to Draymond Green and David West, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he spends some time in the NBA D-League.

Another power forward, who can also play at the center position, Chris Boucher, joined the Warriors, and he signed a two-way contract with the NBA G League affiliate, the Santa Cruz Warriors, but Golden State clearly doesn’t count on him for the upcoming season.

Omri Casspi signed a contract with the Golden State Warriors after his deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves ended, and the 29-year-old will be the third small forward on a depth chart behind Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala. He will mainly play in garbage time, but his experience will be more than welcome at the Bay. Casspi appeared in only 36 matches for the Pelicans, Kings, and Wolves last year, averaging 5.2 ppg and 3.1 rpg. I don’t think he will play in more than 30 games this time around unless one of Durant or Iguodala suffers injury. The first Israeli-born player who appeared in an NBA game will wear #18 for his new team.

The Warriors also signed Nick Young who became a free agent following his contract with the Los Angeles Lakers, and unlike Casspi, he will definitely play a significant role in the second unit. Young is clearly ahead of Patrick McCaw in the pecking order and will likely play around 20 minutes per match as Klay Thompson’s backup. The 32-year-old shooting guard had a solid last season with the Lakers, recording 60 starts (career-high) and averaging 13.2 ppg and 2.3 rpg. He also hit a career-high 170 threes and was a bit over 40% from beyond the arc. Young was always a great shooter, and he joined the team that nurtures excellent shooters, so I believe he will blend in nicely.

Golden State lost Matt Barnes and James McAdoo to free agency, but I am sure they could live without them. In fact, they brought better players in, and although Barnes did play in 74 games, averaging 7.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, and 2.6 apg, the Warriors will not miss him very much.

Despite failing to add a star to their roster, the Warriors’ biggest success this offseason is that they extended the contract with Steph Curry and Kevin Durant, who opted to stay and compete for another championship. Curry led the team in point last year (25.3 ppg), and averaged 6.6 apg, 4.5 rpg, and 1.8 spg, and he also made it into the All-NBA Second Team. For the fifth year in a row, Curry led the NBA in three points made (316) and set the new NBA record for three points made in a single game when he dropped 13 threes against New Orleans in November. He is a leader of this Warriors team and will undoubtedly have another fantastic season. Curry signed a new, five-year deal with GSW.

Kevin Durant decided to continue playing for Golden State Warriors after he won his first NBA ring with them and he wasn’t interested in new adventure, even though the Warriors offered him less money than he earned in 2016/17.  The 28-year-old forward had a great campaign last year as he was the team’s second top scorer with 25.1 ppg, but he also averaged a career-high 8.3 rpg, 4.8 apg, a career-high 1.8 bpg, and 1.06 spg in 33.4 mpg. Like Curry, “Durantula” also earned All-NBA Second Team honors and absolutely destroyed the Cavaliers in the NBA Finals, averaging 35.2 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 5.4 apg. He joined the legendary Michael Jordan as the only players to be named MVP of the NBA Finals with averages of minimum 35 points, eight boards, and five dishes.

Andre Iguodala is going nowhere, and this will be his fifth season with the Warriors, so he will continue to serve as Durant’s backup and also will present a significant force off the bench. Last season, Iggy was listed as a finalist for the 2016-17 NBA Sixth Man of the Year and led the league in assist per turnover ratio with 4.5. The former Philadelphia 76er had a great display in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, scoring 20 points (9-14 FG) in 38 minutes to clinch the victory for the Warriors. He averaged 7.6 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.4 apg and 1.00 spg in 76 games in 2016/17.

The Golden State Warriors were apparently satisfied with the showing of a pair of centers Zaza Pachulia and JaVale McGee, and both will represent the Warriors in 2017/18. The Georgian international led the team with 140 offensive rebounds and averaged 6.1 ppg, 5.9 rpg, and 1.9 apg in 18.1 minutes, which are relatively good numbers, so the Warriors will be more than happy to keep him for another year. McGee spent almost twice as less time on the floor than Zaza (9.6 mpg) and averaged 6.1 ppg, 3.2 rpg in 77 matches. Step Curry’s deputy, Shaun Livingston, signed a new deal with the club as well and this will be his fourth year at Oracle Arena. Although played only 17 minutes per game on average, Livingston did his job decently, and his presence in this squad cannot be underestimated. Finally, the veteran David West will stay for one more year with the Warriors and will be Draymond Green’s sub, but also a valuable mentor to the young players such as Jordan Bell and Kevon Looney. West is known as a great person and morale booster, so it’s always nice to have a player of his caliber in the locker room.

The Bottom Line and Total Win Prediction

The Golden State Warriors were so dominant last season, and I won’t be surprised if they reach 70 wins in 2017/18. Their team is practically unchanged, and it seems that only Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs can compete with them in the West, while Minnesota Timberwolves can also be in the mix with summer reinforcements. In any case, I think Golden State will occupy one of the first two seeds in the conference, and I already see them as the Western Conference finalists. The “Splash Brothers”, KD, Green, and others are looking unstoppable, and the bookies believe they will defend the title and even surpass the number of wins as BetDSI Sportsbook set the margin of wins at 67.5. If all of the players mentioned above remain healthy for the season, I think that opting for over wins sounds like a good investment and these Warriors can emulate the famous 1995-96 Chicago Bulls record of 72 wins and ten defeats.

Season total wins: Over 67.5 wins (-125)
