Golf Fantasy: Weekend Recap

It was a busy weekend around the golf world over the weekend with action from the PGA Tour, LPGA Tour and European tour. Brendan Steele delivered an incredible final round performance on Sunday to steal a win while a familiar face earned another win on the European tour and an unlikely contender stole the show on the LPGA Tour. Here is a recap of the events from around the golf fantasy world this past weekend.

Safeway Open

PGA Tour

In golf fantasy on the PGA Tour, Brendan Steele birdied the final three holes to snag a one-stroke victory at the Safeway Open on Sunday. Steele was hovering just outside of contention for most of the weekend when he followed up a 67 in the third round with a 65 in the final round to edge out Patton Kizzire for the win. Steele’s seven-foot putt on the final hole moved him to 18-under for the tournament as he clinched his second PGA Tour victory and first since winning the 2011 Texas Open. Kizzire led after three rounds but he made an absolute mess out of the par-five 18th and barely managed to save par in order to finish second at 17-under. Paul Casey, Michael Kim, Johnson Wagner and Scott Piercy all tied for third at 16-under. Next up for the PGA Tour is the CIMB Classic in Malaysia this week.

All of the big boys are still on break from the end of the previous season, which is what opened the door for a number of new players to get the win. Guys like Jordan Spieth, Jason Day, Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy all took the week off from the PGA Tour, but all should start getting back in the swing of things in short order.

LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship

LPGA Tour

Taking a look at golf fantasy on the LPGA Tour, Carlota Ciganda survived a late-round meltdown when she beat Alison Lee in a playoff at the $2 million KEB Hana Bank Championship on Sunday. Ciganda blew a four-stroke lead with five holes to play but was fortunate enough to reach a playoff after Lee failed to capitalize on the late opening. Lee had the opportunity to win on the final hole when she missed the fairway with her approach and then just missed what would have been a monster birdie putt and was forced to settle for pad. Ciganda settled down on the playoff hole when she sank an eight-foot putt for the win. It was a very wide open tournament with Lydia Ko and Ariya Jutanugarn both finishing outside of the top-10, as Ko in particular struggled with a plus-three score to finish 51st overall. Next up for the LPGA Tour is the Blue Bay LPGA from South Korea this week.

British Masters

European Tour

Recapping the golf fantasy action on the European Tour, Alex Noren delivered a 69 at The Grove in the final round of the British Masters to clinch a two-stroke victory over Bernd Wiesberger at 18-under. It was Noren’s third victory in his last eight starts and another reminder to the European Ryder Cup team of what they missed out on by leaving him off the team. Noren took him a first prize total of 500,000 euros while Wiesberger settled for the runner-up position at 16-under and Lee Westwood finished third at 15-under. There was a complete logjam after that with Alexander Levy, Graeme McDowell, Tommy Fleetwood and Rich Bland all finishing tied for fourth at 13-under. Next up for the European Tour is the Portugal Masters this week.
