Hiroki Sakai captained Auckland FC to the A-League Men championship as the expansion side beat Sydney FC 1-0 in the decider, claiming the title in only the club’s second season.
Sakai’s career has spanned domestic, continental and international stages. He represented Japan at three consecutive FIFA World Cups and earned 74 caps, while finishing fourth with the national team at the Olympic tournaments in 2012 and 2020. As a 21-year-old he played a pivotal role in Kashiwa Reysol’s 2011 J1 League title following the club’s promotion from the second tier.
He spent the next phase of his career in Europe, registering 238 league appearances across Bundesliga side Hannover and Ligue 1 club Marseille, the latter stint including a runners-up finish in the Europa League. A return to Japan saw him captain Urawa Red Diamonds to the AFC Champions League crown in 2022 and earn the competition’s Most Valuable Player award.
Rather than finish his career at home, Sakai moved to New Zealand to join Auckland FC ahead of the club’s inaugural A-League Men campaign and was immediately named captain. He said at the time he had chosen to pursue new goals and challenges and that the move represented the right career step for his young family.
Auckland topped the regular season in their first year but fell to Melbourne Victory in the semifinals. This season the side finished third behind Newcastle Jets and Adelaide United in the regular standings, then delivered when it mattered most to win the Grand Final. Sakai described the campaign as difficult at times but ultimately rewarding, adding that the triumph was especially meaningful at age 36.
The A-League crown adds to a long list of achievements across club and international football for Sakai, who has combined domestic titles, a continental club success and extensive international experience during his career.
