Each year, the American Gaming Association releases its prediction of how much money will be wagered on the Super Bowl.

Super Bowl 51 generated an estimated $4.7 billion in wagers, though the mass majority of that was done illegally through offshore websites and local bookies.

That estimate likely proved to be a tad on the high side. The AGA estimated that $200,000,000 would be wagered on the Super Bowl at Las Vegas sportsbooks. In actuality, there was only $138 million wagered.

Still, it was a record handle at Las Vegas sportsbooks for how much was bet on Super Bowl 51. The $138 million was up almost $6 million from the 2016 Super Bowl between the Broncos and Panthers, and that was an increase of $16.5 million from the year prior when the Patriots beat the Seahawks.

Back in 1991, when numbers were first widely available for Las Vegas sportsbooks, the handle in Sin City for the Super Bowl totaled just $40 million. That amount has more than tripled in the last two and a half decades, and it could top $150 million for the first time this year.

The AGA began making predictions for how much would be wagered on the Super Bowl four years ago. The first estimate was $3.8 billion for the Patriots and Seahawks, followed by $4.1 billion for the Panthers and Broncos and finally $4.2 billion last year for the Patriots and Falcons.

BetDSI Sportsbook has lined the AGA’s estimate at $4.5 billion bet on the 2018 Super Bowl.

With the economy booming across the United States, more Americans have disposable money to wager on the Super Bowl than ever before. Furthermore, a new and rabid fan base in Philadelphia is back in the Super Bowl for the first time since 2005.

The last time the Eagles were in the Super Bowl, there was a 10.5 percent jump in the amount wagered in Las Vegas from 2004 ($81.2 million) to 2005 ($90.8 million). If we see a 10 percent jump again this year, Las Vegas could be looking at a handle as high as $152 million alongside a total number gambled hovering around $4.6 billion.

The Patriots are favored by 5-points with a total of 48 on the 2018 Super Bowl odds.
