HSBC Women’s Champions Preview

The best on the LPGA Tour will make the trip to the Sentosa Golf Club in Singapore as the ladies’ Asian swing continues with the HSBC Women’s Champions this week. Defending champion Ha Na Jang will attempt to successfully defend her title when she makes her third appearance at this course after finishing in the top-15 in each of her first two starts here, including a win a year ago. Jang will definitely have her work cut out for her this week though as she isn’t even listed among the top-five sports betting favorites to win this event.

Event Details

Event: HSBC Women’s Champions

Category: PGA

Date: March 2-5

Location: Sentosa Golf Club (Singapore Course), Singapore

This will mark the 10th year of the HSBC Women’s Champions and no player has ever won multiple times. Nine different players have competed in all 10 editions of this tournament and lately it has been the South Koreans shining brightest with Jang and Inbee Park winning each of the last two installments of this event.

Past Five Winners

2016: Ha-Na Jang -19

2015: Inbee Park -18

2014: Paula Creamer -10

2013: Stacy Lewis -15

2012: Angela Stanford -10

What To Know About The Course

Accuracy has been extremely important at this course whether it’s off the tee or Scrambling to find the greens. The distance isn’t overwhelming by any means but it’s worth taking a glance at the Driving Accuracy and Scrambling numbers as well as the Putting statistics. This isn’t a long course by any means and those that are able to consistently sink their putts end up turning this tournament in to an annual birdie fest the way that Jang and Park did in each of the last two years when they finished -19 and -18 respectively.

The Field

Despite winning this tournament a year ago, Jang is only listed as a +1600 pick to repeat and win the HSBC Women’s Champions outright again in 2017. Shanshan Feng has looked good enough of late to be considered with Ariya Jutanugarn as the co-favorites to win this event at +800 odds while Lexi Thompson, So Yeon Ryu and Lydia Ko are in the mix as well. Amy Yang, In Gee Chun and Sung Hyun Park are all interesting plays at +1400 odds, especially considering no champion has ever won this event twice before.

A Good Matchup To Bet: Inbee Park over Lexi Thompson

It makes sense to fade past winners based on the fact that there has never been a two-time champion at this event. However, Park is definitely capable of putting on a show at this week’s HSBC Women’s Champions and even if she doesn’t win she could finish ahead of Thompson. Park dominated at this course only two years ago when she won with a -18 score so while we aren’t taking her to win outright there is definitely value there betting her against Thompson in the head-to-head sports betting matchup.

Top-Five Pick: Ariya Jutanugarn

Jutanugarn has been off to a slow start following her incredible 2016 run with a pair of top-10 finishes in her first three events but zero wins. It seems like only a matter of time before Jutanugarn finally breaks through with a win so maybe this is the week that it happens. Considering she has never won here before, there is a good chance Jutanugarn puts on a show this week and finds a way to win this event outright.
