Utility infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa has agreed to a one-year contract with the Boston Red Sox, according to sources familiar with the negotiations. The agreement, which has not yet been officially announced by the team, brings a versatile defender and experienced presence to Boston’s roster as the team continues to shape its lineup for the upcoming season.
Kiner-Falefa, 28, has built a reputation for his defensive flexibility and contact-hitting ability since making his major league debut with the Texas Rangers in 2018. Over his career, he has played multiple infield positions, including third base, shortstop, and second base, and has also spent time in the outfield. His defensive prowess earned him a Gold Glove Award at third base in 2020.
Most recently with the New York Yankees, Kiner-Falefa spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons working in a hybrid role. While his offensive numbers have varied across seasons, he has consistently provided steady glove work and base-running speed. In his two years in New York, Kiner-Falefa appeared in more than 200 games, offering depth and stability across a variety of positions.
The Red Sox have prioritized defensive improvement and depth this offseason, and Kiner-Falefa’s skill set aligns with those objectives. His addition gives manager Alex Cora more flexibility in managing the infield and expands the team’s late-game and platoon options.
Boston’s front office has been active in reshaping the roster after a challenging 2024 campaign. Kiner-Falefa joins a group of new additions aimed at strengthening both the clubhouse culture and the team’s in-game versatility. While contract details have not yet been disclosed, the one-year agreement allows both sides to reassess after the 2025 season.
Kiner-Falefa’s ability to contribute both defensively and as a contact hitter could fill several needs for Boston throughout the course of the season, particularly if injuries or slumps arise. With spring training approaching, he is expected to compete for a role across the infield and potentially in the outfield.
