Jaydon Blue’s rookie season with the Dallas Cowboys was marked by uneven usage and an early practice mishap that drew coach Brian Schottenheimer’s attention. Schottenheimer recalled in October seeing Blue leave practice with blisters from custom Louis Vuitton–print cleats, a moment that prompted an immediate equipment change.

Blue, a 2025 fifth-round pick, made his NFL debut in Week 5 after Miles Sanders was sidelined with a knee injury. He had four carries for seven yards in that game and was active for four consecutive contests before being a healthy scratch for the next eight. Malik Davis ultimately supplanted Blue as the primary backup, finishing the season as the Cowboys’ second-leading rusher with 250 yards behind Javonte Williams’ 1,201.

Blue finished the season with 129 yards and a touchdown on 38 carries. He started the finale against the New York Giants and finished with 64 yards on 16 carries; he had 76 rushing yards in the first half but lost 12 yards on five second-half carries as the offense stalled after Dak Prescott was removed from the game.

After the season, Schottenheimer said he and Blue had a “candid conversation” in which they “put all the cards on the table.” Schottenheimer added that Blue “didn’t like being inactive” and that the player “ingested” the feedback and returned to the offseason program with “a great look on his face and a great work ethic.” The coach described Blue’s change during the offseason program as “night and day.”

Blue credited that conversation and ongoing feedback from running backs coach Derrick Foster for his renewed focus. “For me, I just think it’s just me looking myself in the mirror, like, why I wasn’t on the field like I should have last year,” Blue said, citing maturity and a desire to be a meaningful piece of the offense.

Blue was never the lead runner at Texas but was a key contributor, starting five of 15 games as a junior and totaling 730 yards on 134 carries with eight touchdowns, plus 42 catches for 368 yards and six receiving scores. With Williams entering the season as the unquestioned lead back on a three-year, $24 million deal, the Cowboys did not add a veteran, leaving Davis, Blue and Phil Mafah — who missed most of last season with a shoulder injury — as the primary contenders for backup roles. Schottenheimer has continued to point to Blue’s speed as a positive for the offense.
