Boston Celtics guard Jaylen Brown expressed his frustration with the officiating following his team’s 100-95 loss to the San Antonio Spurs. Speaking after the game, Brown indicated that he believes there is a disparity in the way fouls are called, suggesting that his team does not receive the same level of consideration from referees as their opponents.
The Celtics entered the game with one of the NBA’s top records, but struggled offensively against a Spurs team that has been near the bottom of the standings. Brown led the Celtics in scoring but was visibly agitated by some of the calls—or lack thereof—during the game. On multiple occasions, he appeared to take contact while driving to the basket but did not receive a whistle.
“We’re playing hard, we’re attacking the paint, but we’re not getting those calls,” Brown said after the game. “It’s frustrating. At some point, you just want to be officiated fairly.”
Brown’s frustration came to a head late in the fourth quarter, when several contentious no-calls and foul calls against Boston contributed to a scoring run by San Antonio. The Spurs capitalized at the free throw line and were able to maintain their lead in the closing moments.
While the Celtics had opportunities to tie or take the lead in the final minute, missed shots and turnovers hindered their efforts. Brown’s comments reflect not only his own experience but also an ongoing concern across the league from various players regarding officiating consistency.
Celtics head coach Joe Mazzulla did not directly address the officiating after the loss, instead focusing on the team’s execution and missed opportunities. “We had a chance to win the game regardless,” Mazzulla said. “We have to be better in those moments.”
With the loss, the Celtics will look to regroup and prepare for their upcoming schedule. Brown’s remarks are likely to draw attention from the NBA league office, which often reviews comments made by players about officiating.
The game also highlighted the resilience of a young Spurs roster, which managed to close out the contest despite facing a more experienced Celtics team. Victor Wembanyama led San Antonio with a strong performance, contributing both offensively and defensively.
As the season continues, Boston will aim to maintain its position near the top of the Eastern Conference while addressing both on-court issues and concerns raised by its players.
