Jets Could Shed Revis After Arrest

The Jets may have gotten what they needed to part ways with Revis for free.

It’s no secret to anyone that Revis Island was a veritable resort destination last season. The fall-off from his previous Pro Bowl form was clear to even Darrelle Revis himself and there was little doubt he and the New York Jets would have to come to some kind of money-related understanding this offseason.

Revis’ current legal situation just made that decision a hell of  a lot easier for the Jets.

Revis was arrested for multiple insane charges in Pittsburgh after getting into an altercation with a couple of idiots who wouldn’t stop filming him with a cell phone. Regardless of whether Revis does any jail time or suffers any serious legal punishment, the arrest alone gives the Jets a chance to void the rest of Revis’ contract. A contract that was going to pay him over $15 million this season alone.

According to NJ.com and ESPN, Revis’ deal says it can be voided if “he’s fined or suspended for violating the NFL’s personal-conduct policy or ‘if the player engages in personal conduct reasonably judged by Club to adversely affect or reflect on Club.”

Being charged with making “terroristic threats” would probably cover any and all of that, not to mention assault and robbery.

If the Jets cut Revis without pulling any contract shenanigans, they’ll owe him $6 million in guaranteed money and will have nearly $8 million in cap space gone. If they can shed him due to the clause in his contract, they can get all, or most of that, back in cap space. Space they sorely need since the Jets should be in full rebuilding mode now.

Revis is one of the best players in the Jets’ history and, though he declined last season, he can still play corner at an NFL level. Hell, if he could make the switch to safety he could probably play another four or five years.

Revis played in 15 games last season, made one pick, defended five passes and made 53 tackles.

Dolphins begin spending spree by locking in Wake

After making a few key salary cap moves, among them cutting defensive end Mario Williams, the Miami Dolphins began spending that freshly available money over the weekend when they signed defensive end Cameron Wake to a two-year extension worth $19 million with $11 million guaranteed.

Last season Wake played in all 16 games for the Dolphins, making 29 tackles, picking off a pass, defending two passes, forcing five fumbles and recording 11.5 sacks on the way to his fifth Pro Bowl selection.

Getting Wake’s deal settled is just the beginning of the work Miami has ahead of it. They need to get new deals done for safety Reshad Jones and wide receiver Jarvis Landry too as both are entering the final year of their current contracts.

Jones missed most of last season with an injury, but Landry was consistently the best weapon the Dolphins could put on the field. He caught 94 passes for 1,136 yards and four touchdowns.

Floyd heads to the slammer

Super Bowl winning wide receiver Michael Floyd’s celebration has to take a break as he’s set to begin a 24-day stay in jail over his DUI arrest and conviction in Arizona from last season that got him cut by the Arizona Cardinals.

As Floyd was picked up by the New England Patriots during their late-season and playoff run, he should probably feel OK about that.

Floyd is probably a lot less OK as he begins his stay at Shawshank. He has to spend 24 days in jail and follow that with 96 days under house arrest while paying over $5,000 in fines. Floyd also must complete 30 hours of community service.

Floyd appeared in three games for the Patriots, but didn’t suit up in the Super Bowl or the AFC Championship game. He is now, officially, a free agent and will likely have to serve some kind of NFL suspension for any team that signs him.

Floyd was  a first round pick for the Cardinals in 2012. His best season was 2013 where he caught 65 passes for 1,041 yards and five touchdowns.
