Jets vs. 49ers Preview and Prediction

The New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers are both coming off humiliating losses that represented the low points in their absolutely brutal seasons respectively. One of those teams will bounce back with a win in their Week 14 matchup with each team having already turned its attention to the future after being eliminated from playoff contention.

On The Jets Side of the Ball (3-9 Record, 4-8 ATS)

The Jets season hit a low point in their 41-10 blowout loss to the Indianapolis Colts in front of their home fans and they have now dropped four straight while failing to cover the number in three of those games. Ryan Fitzpatrick might finally be done with New York following another absolutely brutal performance and it seems as though Todd Bowles will stick with Bryce petty moving forward. Petty went 11-for-25 for 135 passing yards and one touchdown with two interceptions in relief of Fitzpatrick against Indianapolis so it’s not like he represents an upgrade at the position this week. Meanwhile, the Jets defense was torched by Andrew Luck for 421 yards and four touchdowns so at this point it seems as though this team’s stock has hit a low point on both sides of the football as they head to the west coast for this week’s game.

On The 49ers Side of the Ball (1-11 Record; 3-9 ATS)

The 49ers were an absolute mess in the snowy conditions at Soldier Field last week as Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert combined for just 39 passing yards on 5-of-15 passing in a 26-6 loss. Kaepernick took five sacks before he was replaced and while Gabbert wasn’t much better, he will get the start this week.

The bigger issue here could be that Chip Kelly has lost the team a little bit. Although Kaepernick was struggling, it was a bizarre move to bench him after he had played so well over the last month. He almost single-handedly gave this team a chance to win, and then Kelly benches him in one bad effort in a bad-weather situation. What kind of message does that send to the team?

San Francisco simply can’t be any worse than they were against Chicago but it’s hard to imagine them faring much better against a Jets’ team that has to be better this week just based on the talent they have on their roster. San Francisco owns the worst defense in the NFL this season with an average of 31.8 points allowed per game so it’s not like they will be able to lean on that unit to take some pressure off of their dismal offense once again this week.

Quick Analysis

The 49ers have won seven of their last eight matchups against the Jets including each of their last three in San Francisco but that trend could come to an end this week. The 49ers are 1-11 straight up this season and just 3-9 against the spread so it will be very interesting to see what the number is for this week and whether San Francisco can keep it close. New York is 1-4 both straight up and against the spread over its last five road games.

Prediction

For as bad as New York looked last week in its loss to Indianapolis, this is the same team that lost by just five to the New England Patriots the week before, so they should bounce back to a certain degree. Petty isn’t going to win this game on his own but if he can avoid turnovers and giving it away, then the Jets run game and defense should be able to help them get back in the win column in San Francisco this week.
