Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh acknowledged this week that he is “still processing” the recent and unexpected firing of former Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore. Moore, who served as Harbaugh’s offensive coordinator during his tenure with the Wolverines, was dismissed from his head coaching post under undisclosed circumstances.
Harbaugh and Moore collaborated closely at the University of Michigan, especially during the 2023 and 2024 college football seasons, a period marked by significant success for the Wolverines. Moore was promoted to offensive coordinator after years on the coaching staff and was widely regarded as a rising star in the college football coaching ranks.
When Harbaugh left Michigan to take over as head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers in the NFL early in 2025, Moore was elevated to the head coaching role. His tenure, however, was cut unexpectedly short, as his dismissal was announced without extensive public explanation.
Speaking to reporters at the Chargers’ practice facility, Harbaugh expressed personal and professional surprise over the development. “We worked closely and accomplished a lot together,” Harbaugh said. “He’s a good man, and I’m still processing what happened.”
Throughout their time at Michigan, Harbaugh and Moore built a strong rapport. Moore was known for his innovative approach to offensive strategy and was instrumental in guiding Michigan to several key victories, including postseason appearances that cemented the program’s national relevance.
Harbaugh did not comment on the details of Moore’s firing, noting that he hasn’t been fully briefed on the situation. “It’s tough when you see someone you respect go through something like that,” he said. “I wish him nothing but the best moving forward.”
As Harbaugh continues his first NFL season since departing Michigan, his reflections on Moore’s dismissal underscore the enduring impact of collegiate partnerships, even as careers progress to different stages. The nature and implications of Moore’s firing remain unclear, but his past accomplishments and the respect voiced by former colleagues suggest that his coaching journey may not be over.
