Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy returned to practice on Wednesday, marking his first appearance since being diagnosed with a hairline fracture in his right hand. The injury had sidelined McCarthy in recent weeks, and his participation in practice raises questions about his potential availability for the team’s regular season finale.

McCarthy, the Vikings’ first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, took limited reps during the mid-week session. Although he was back on the field, head coach Kevin O’Connell did not confirm whether McCarthy would be available to start or play in the upcoming game. The team is taking a cautious approach with their young quarterback as the season comes to a close.

The Vikings have navigated several quarterback changes throughout the season, starting with injuries early in the year and continuing with lineup adjustments due to performance and health concerns. McCarthy had taken over the starting role prior to the injury and showed moments of promise while adjusting to the professional level.

O’Connell emphasized the team’s priority remains McCarthy’s long-term development and health, noting that the medical staff would continue to monitor his progress daily. “J.J. is doing everything he can to get back out there,” O’Connell said. “We’ll evaluate how he responds to this week’s workload before making any decisions.”

The Vikings are currently eliminated from playoff contention, which may influence the decision-making process regarding McCarthy’s return. The coaching staff could opt for a more conservative approach, preserving the rookie for offseason recovery and future development programs rather than risking further injury in a game with limited postseason implications.

While fans are eager to see more of McCarthy before the end of the season, the organization’s primary concern appears to be ensuring he enters the offseason healthy and ready for the next stage of his career. The Vikings are expected to provide another update later this week as they finalize preparations for their season-ending matchup.
