Following a 128-106 loss to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night, Los Angeles Lakers head coach JJ Redick addressed the media and acknowledged that officiating played a role in the outcome of the game. The contest was closely contested for much of the evening before the Pistons pulled away in the latter stages to secure a decisive victory.
Redick, who took over as the Lakers’ head coach earlier this season, noted that several calls—or the lack thereof—impacted the flow of the game and his team’s ability to stay competitive. He emphasized that while officiating was a factor, it was not the sole reason for the defeat.
“There were a few moments where it felt like the momentum shifted because of some calls,” Redick said. “That said, we also didn’t execute the way we needed to, especially in the second half.”
The Lakers struggled to maintain their offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter, allowing the Pistons to close the game on a commanding run. Detroit took advantage of several key possessions and turnovers to break the game open. Despite keeping the score close through the first three quarters, the Lakers were ultimately outscored 36-20 in the final period.
While Redick voiced concern about the officiating, he did not place full blame on the referees. He pointed to lapses in defensive assignments and rebounding as areas the Lakers will need to address moving forward.
“We have to control what we can control,” Redick added. “That’s our effort, our discipline, and our focus.”
The loss drops the Lakers further into a competitive Western Conference race, where consistency on both ends of the court will be vital. The team will look to regroup quickly as they prepare for their next matchup slated later this week. Meanwhile, the Pistons’ victory marks a strong showing after recent struggles, displaying improved cohesion on both offense and defense.
While issues related to officiating remain a topic of discussion, the Lakers understand that internal adjustments are crucial as the season progresses.
