Johnny Hockey Making a Name For Himself

Calgary's Johnny Hockey is breaking the NHL mold

We all know about 2012 Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel and his many exploits.  Barring a turnaround from a dispiriting rookie year, Johnny Football is on his way to being a big time NFL Draft bust.

There is another highly accomplished Johnny, however, that is making inroads as the top rookie of his chosen sport.  Johnny Gaudreau of the Calgary Flames has emerged as one of the top young players in the game.  The 2014 Hobey Baker Award winner as the best player in college hockey is shattering the mode of the modern NHL Player.

Johnny Hockey Makes his Name

Gaudreau became a star with the Boston College Eagles in NCAA Division I hockey.  He was the top freshman scorer at BC and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award in 2013 before winning the Heisman of Hockey in 2014.  He dominated college hockey en route to winning the award with 36 goals and 80 points in 40 games.

Quite a Day

On the same day that he won the Hobey Baker Award, Gaudreau played in his first ever NHL game for the Flames.  He scored his first NHL goal for Calgary on his first shot on goal to cap off a day that he’ll never forget.

Breaking the Mold

The Flames are run by a man in team president Bryan Burke that likes size and truculence.  The NHL has become a big man’s game, yet Gaudreau is noticeably small at 5 ft. 9 in. and 165 pounds.  With 15 goals and 22 assists, he is proving that he can excel in a big man’s game at the highest level.  He is second among NHL rookies for scoring and his success and the similar moniker to Manziel is making him a hockey cult hero.

Trademark

While Manziel is becoming known for trouble and failure, Gaudreau is becoming celebrated for his work ethic and modest demeanor.  He was a fan favorite at Boston College and that popularity has translated to Calgary where he has become a fan favorite.

“He’s quiet and reserved but a great person to talk to one on one and he’s definitely a fan favorite in Calgary and the crowd loves it,” said Flames star defenseman and team captain Mark Giordano.  “He has handled everything amazing.”

Gaudreau may be modest, but he is getting great business advice.   Johnny Hockey has applied to patent and trademark his moniker that is becoming a hot sales item.  With his highlight reel style of play and winning demeanor it’s a name that will continue to sell.
