EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Justin Herbert returned to Chargers practice Wednesday after skipping Phase 2 of the team’s offseason program to support his girlfriend, singer Madison Beer. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Herbert informed him he would miss the sessions to join the start of Beer’s tour.
Harbaugh said his response was simple: “Do you need a ride to the airport?” He added that Herbert is typically at every voluntary and nonvoluntary workout and that he welcomed the quarterback taking time away.
Harbaugh noted Herbert’s availability and toughness, citing the quarterback’s quick return after breaking his hand and his on-field physicality. “He’s somebody who’s here all the time,” Harbaugh said, describing Herbert’s consistency in the building.
Herbert participated in 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills Wednesday, connecting with several of the Chargers’ top targets while new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel watched. McDaniel was audible during practice, at one point yelling, “Let’s go, 10!” as the offense ran through periods.
Harbaugh said Beer’s tour began in Poland on May 11, following the release of her album ‘The Locket.’ Herbert appeared in Beer’s music video earlier this month for the song ‘lovergirl,’ which shows the pair on a beach, in a photo booth and playing cards together. The two were first seen together in August and attended a Los Angeles Lakers game in March.
