How to Kentucky Derby Like a VIP

Kentucky Derby

It’s Kentucky Derby time! This amazing time of year where we watch the best of the best of the racing world square off to see who is named, well, the best of the best. It all takes place on May 6th.

So while you’re watching the best of the best, why not act like the VIP that you are for this Kentucky Derby experience. Here are just a few suggestions on how to make it happen:

Kentucky DerbyFly a private jet: Get to Louisville with your own personal jet through Derby Air, a bespoke private jet shuttle service being offered to and from Louisville by Sentient Jet.  Just look at that photo. I’ll be thinking of that as I sit in my economy seat, squished next to the biggest passenger on the plane with my knees killing me, when I go to Tennesee next month. The service comes with an exclusive in-flight bourbon cocktail created by horseracing aficionado Bobby Flay.

Don’t worry if can’t make it to the private jet. I’ve hooked you up with Bobby Flay’s cocktail recipe you can make at home:

Kentucky 95 Cocktail, Serves: 1

1 ounce Bourbon

¾ ounce simple syrup

½ ounce fresh lemon juice

1 ounce fresh orange juice

Cold sparkling wine

Orange slice, for garnish

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice cubes, add the bourbon, simple syrup, lemon and orange juice, shake for 10 second, strain into a white wine glass over ice and top off with sparkling wine.  Garnish with an orange slice.

Thanks Bobby!

Speaking of Bobby Flay, for those of us who are going to nosh on mozzarella sticks and leftover Chinese food while we watch the races, here is what Bobby is serving at the popular Bobby Flay’s Derby Breakfast, which he’ll host at 21C for Sentient Jet Cardholders.

  • Blue Crab and Grits, Poached Egg, Bacon and Mustard Greens
  • Kentucky Ham Benedict, Chive and Hot Sauce Hollandaise
  • Cinnamon Crusted French Toast, Banana, Pecans, Bourbon
  • Cast Iron Home Fries, Smoked Paprika
  • Sorghum glazed thick-cut bacon
  • Black pepper buttermilk biscuits, molasses butter
  • Yogurt Panna Cotta with Clementine Honey and Toasted Almond Crunch

For those of you who don’t know, Flay is a huge horseracing fan and even owns an interest in WinStar Farm LLC’s Creator

“Kentucky is a special place to me. It brings to mind three of my favorite things: bourbon, thoroughbreds and amazing southern food,” said Flay. “I’m thrilled to be able to kick off one of America’s greatest sporting events with Sentient Jet on the first Saturday of May with the first meal of that day, a breakfast fit for the Derby.”

If you’re a VIP, you already have your tickets to the gala that’s held the night before the big race, Unbridled Eve. The tickets are sold out (except the dance tickets for after the gala at $350 apiece) but it’s all for a good cause, so get on your dancing shoes!

Don’t forget your hat! Derby regulars know that a super cool hat is a must, so make sure that you have one of those! (Looking for the right Derby wear? Someone from Shinesty sent me some information about their Derby clothes, so check out the outfits here that you can buy for the event.

Kentucky DerbyDon’t tell Ej the Rainmaker, my other half, but I would do anything to see him wear one of these jackets on Kentucky Derby day.
And if you want the best spot to see the race, you need an invitation — not a ticket — to The Mansion. Shhhh, it’s a secret place and along with it is a private wine cellar and a personal concierge.

Okay are you ready for this VIP price tag? According to this article in Town & Country, you can’t just buy a ticket into the Mansion. You have to be invited to purchase one. Ticket costs vary per packages, but start at around $7,500 each and go upwards to $14,000 a piece. According to Sentient Jet, who offers its 25-Hour Jet Card in four jet-size options, allowing clients to purchase flight time on Light, Mid, Super-Mid and Heavy aircraft as well as in two age classes (Preferred and Select), it starts at $124,825.

I think I just choked on my mozzarella sticks.
