La Liga Fantasy: Recapping Week 9

There was no shortage of scoring across La Liga this past weekend and that made it a difficult contest to earn top honors at the respective positions. We broke down the numbers to figure out who was the best of the best at each spot. Here is a look at the top individual performances by position from this past weekend in La Liga fantasy.

GK: Carlos Kameni, Malaga

Sergio Rico was outstanding in Sevilla’s 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid but in terms of the overall La Liga fantasy score no goalkeeper was better than Kameni for Malaga. The Cameroon-native stopped all five shots he faced to preserve the clean sheet bonus in a 4-0 win over Leganes. Rico definitely deserves an honorable mention after closing the door on Atletico Madrid but no La Liga goalkeeper was better this past weekend than Kameni. It’s not often that Malaga makes our list for La Liga fantasy. They are currently in 10th place in the Spanish Primera, having scored 12 goals in nine games (while allowing 10 goals).

Honorable Mention: Sergio Rico, Sevilla FC; Geronimo Rulli, Real Sociedad

D: Hugo Mallo, Celta Vigo

Mallo got in to the act with his second goal of the season in Celta Vigo’s 4-1 win over Deportivo La Coruna. Mallo was all over the pitch in the 4-1 win and his goal in the 32nd minute set the tone for a four-goal outburst as Celta Vigo didn’t slow down after opening the scoring in the lopsided win. Celta Vigo hasn’t had an easy time of things at the back end in terms. In terms of La Liga fantasy, their 17 gaols are the most allowed among any team in teh Top 13. It’s quite impressive that they’re in eighth place with such a record at the back end.

Honorable Mention: Raul Navas, Real Sociedad

M: Iago Aspas, Celta Vigo

In a relatively quiet weekend from some of the star players around La Liga, Aspas was outstanding from start to finish as he scored two goals on as many shots in the 4-1 win over Deportivo La Coruna. His offensive production alone would have been enough for Celta Vigo to pick up its fourth win of the season as they are off to an excellent start with 13 points through nine games.

M: Sandro Ramirez, Malaga

Ramirez was all over the pitch for Malaga in its 4-0 win over Leganes, registering a goal and an assist with a total of six shots in the victory. It was an outstanding performance for a Malaga side that has shown flashes at times this season as Leganes had no answer from the opening whistle. Malaga has now compiled three wins, three losses and three draws on the season. Their 12 points have them sitting in 9th place tie with Las Palmas and Eibar.

Honorable Mention: Steven N’Zonzi, Sevilla FC; David Lopez, Espanyol

F: Lionel Messi, Barcelona

Messi opened the scoring for Barcelona in the 22nd minute and then capped off the 3-2 win over Valencia with a penalty shot goal in the fourth minute of injury time. It was an outstanding performance as he finished with two goals and four shots in total while leading the way to victory up front for Barcelona. Barcelona has now scored a league-leading 29 goals this season, which is five better than any other team in La Liga.

F: Leo Baptisto, Espanyol

Ten-man Espanyol fought back from three goals down in one of the incredible comebacks of the season so far as they managed to earn a point in a 3-3 tie with Eibar. Baptisto led the way up front with a goal and an assist and it was his marker in the second minute of injury time that tied the game at 3-3. Baptisto finished the game with a fury and he certainly earned a spot on this list with his tying goal. Espanyol has had a tough time at the defensive end this season and this week was no different. Their 17 goals allowed are among the highest in La Liga. Only five other teams have allowed more.

Honorable Mention: Pablo Piatti, Espanyol; Sergi Enrich, Eibar; Kike, Eibar
