La Liga Fantasy: Week 17 Recap

Sevilla FC shocked the soccer world with an incredible upset win over Real Madrid that stunned the La Liga standings leaders over the weekend. While the game-winning goal in that stunning finish was enough for one of their substitutes to earn honors at his position in this column this week the real dominant team from a fantasy perspective was Barcelona, which closed the gap on Real Madrid with a 5-0 win over Las Palmas. Here is a look at the top individual La Liga fantasy performances by position in the Spanish Primera this past week.

GK: Miguel Angel Moya, Atletico Madrid

Moya was absolutely brilliant for Atletico Madrid in their 1-0 win over Real Betis as he stopped all six shots he faced to preserve the clean sheet victory. There was no doubt that Atletico was on its heels trying to keep up with Real Betis at times following a busy week outside of league play but Moya stepped up big time to shut the door and help them earn an important three points in the standings.

Honorable Mention: Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Barcelona; Ruben Blanco, Celta Vigo

D: Aleix Vidal, Barcelona

Vidal got in to the action for Barcelona late in the game with a late tally in the 80th minute to secure the top fantasy performance of the week at his position. Vidal’s final line included a goal, one shot on target, two fouls drawn and a clean sheet bonus as Barcelona rolled to the lopsided victory.

Honorable Mention: Antonio Luna, Eibar; David Lopez, Espanyol

M: Arda Turan, Barcelona

Turan was another top performer for Barcelona with a goal, two shots on target and a bonus for the clean sheet victory. It was Barcelona football at its best on Saturday and Turan continued to deliver as an underrated contributor in daily fantasy leagues.

M: Nemanja Radoja, Celta Vigo

Celta Vigo escaped a clash with Alaves with three points thanks to a late goal from Radoja, who found the back of the net in the 89th minute with the lone goal of the game. Radoja had a goal on two shots and received added bonuses for Celta Vigo’s clean sheet and for scoring the game winner. Celtia Viga is now sitting in eighth place in the Spanish Primera standings. They have been a decent option for La Liga fantasy in terms of offensive choices bu they have been sub par at the back end. They have allowed 32 goals in 18 games, which is the most of any team in the top 16. It’s impressive that they are where they are given how many goals they’ve allowed to this point.

Honorable Mention: Nicolas Gaitan, Atletico Madrid; Artem Kravatz, Granada

F: Luis Suarez, Barcelona

While Lionel Messi earned an honorable mention in this column it was Suarez that earned top La Liga fantasy honors at the forward position with two goals on six shots in the 5-0 win. Barcelona is so deep up front that a different striker can step up every week and deliver a marquee performance and this week it was Suarez’s turn to steal the show.

F: Stevan Jovetic, Sevilla

Sevilla shocked the world and ended Real Madrid’s undefeated run at 40 with a 2-1 win thanks to a massive goal from Jovetic off the bench. Jovetic came on as a substitute and wasted little time with a goal in the first minute of second half injury time to push Sevilla past Real Madrid. It was a timely goal from a player that only had two shots off the bench and the bonus he received for scoring the game-winning goal helped him edge out his competition in this category. Sevilla is now in second place in the Spanish Primera. Look to them for offensive in La Liga fantasy as they have scored 38 goals in 18 games this season. That’s the second-most in La Liga, only trailing the 46 of Real Madrid and the 47 of Barcelona. Only four teams in La Liga have scored more than 30 goals.

Honorable Mention: Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid; Lionel Messi, Barcelona; Pedro Leon, Eibar
