La Liga Fantasy: Week 17 Recap

Real Madrid and Sevilla provided a pair of lopsided wins in an otherwise relatively quiet weekend in terms of goal scoring in La Liga action this past week. We took the time to break down the numbers and figure out which players delivered the best fantasy scores at their respective positions and it’s no surprise that Real Madrid and Sevilla are well represented on this list. Here is a look at the top individual La Liga fantasy performances by position from this past weekend.

GK: Sergio Rico, Sevilla FC

Sevilla was the big winner this past week with a lopsided 4-0 victory over Real Sociedad and while the offense certainly led the way it was Rico that shut the door defensively with the best fantasy performance among La Liga goalkeepers this past week. Rico stopped all five shots he faced in the victory with a clean sheet bonus to put him over the top as the top La Liga fantasy goalkeeper. On the season, Sevilla now surprising sits in second place with 36 points in 17 games. That puts them up on Barcelona, which is a bit of a surprise. Sevilla has gotten to this point on the strength of 36 goals scored and a +15 goal differential, which is the fourth-best number in the Spanish Primera.

Honorable Mention: Antonio Aldan, Real Betis; Javi Varas, Las Palmas; Keylor Navas, Real Madrid; Miguel Angel Moya, Atletico Madrid

D: Marcelo, Real Madrid

Marcelo was the leader on the back end for Real Madrid in their 5-0 win over Granada with an assist and some strong defensive play to help secure the clean sheet bonus. Marcelo was one of a handful of defenders that earned the clean sheet bonus this past week but his assist put him over the top in La Liga fantasy action. Real Madrid currently sits atop the standings table with 40 points through 16 games. By most metrics, they’ve been the best in the business this year as their 45 goals are the most in La Liga while their 14 goals allowed are the second-fewest. Only Villarreal has allowed fewer goals than them (12).

Honorable Mention: Filipe Luis, Atletico Madrid; Nicolas Pareja, Sevilla FC

M: Gerard Moreno, Espanyol

It was a relatively quiet weekend for La Liga midfielders but it was Moreno who delivered the best fantasy score with a goal and four shots in total. Espanyol couldn’t figure out a way to get the win over Deportivo La Coruna but it was Moreno that saved the day and helped them earn a point in the 1-1 draw with his performance.

M: Saul Niguez, Atletico Madrid

Niguez scored a goal and had two shots in Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 win over Eibar. His goal in the 54th minute ended up standing as the game-winning goal with Antoine Griezmann adding an insurance marker in the 74th minute to seal the victory. Atletico Madrid now sits in fourth place in the La Liga standings but they are four points back of third-place Barcelona and nine points behind the league-leaders in Real Madrid. They have some work to do.

Honorable Mention: Cristiano Piccini, Real Betis; Luca Modric, Real Madrid; Daniel Wass, Celta Vigo

F: Wissam Ben Yedder, Sevilla FC

Sevilla’s onslaught was led by Wissam Ben Yedder, who was in on all four of their goals in the blowout win. Ben Yedder registered a hat trick on four shots and then added an assist on Pablo Sarabia’s marker late in the game. Ben Yedder had the best fantasy score in La Liga this past week and one of the best fantasy scores regardless of position overall this season.

F: Isco, Real Madrid

Real Madrid won 5-0 over Granada but unlike with Sevilla their goal scoring was very spread out with Isco, Karim Benzema, Cristiano Ronaldo and Casemiro all finding the back of the net. Isco led the way with two goals and four shots to register the second-best La Liga fantasy score at his position this past week.

Honorable Mention: Karim Benzema, Real Madrid; Iago Aspas, Celta Vigo; Cristiano Ronaldo, Real Madrid; Antoine Griezmann, Atletico Madrid
