Least Profitable College Football Teams To Bet On This Season

Tennessee Volunteers

Wisconsin heads to the Big Ten Championship game as one of the most profitable teams in the country to bet on this season. The Badgers have produced a 12-0 record straight up while producing an 8-4 record against the spread this season. Meanwhile, for as impressive as Wisconsin has been as a profitable team to wager on, there are a number of teams that have been massive disappointments. Here is a look at the least profitable college football teams to bet on this season.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

ATS Record This Season: 1-10-1

Hawaii is at the top of the list in terms of the college football teams that you did not want to bet on this season. The Rainbow Warriors closed out the year with five straight losses including each of the last three by double-digit margins. Hawaii finished the year with a 3-9 record straight up. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the Rainbow Warriors went just 1-10-1 against the spread. Hawaii’s 9.1-percent cover rate is by far the worst mark in the entire country. If you bet on the Rainbow Warriors to win or cover in many games this season, there is a good chance you paid for it with some substantial losses.

Florida State Seminoles

ATS Record This Season: 2-7-2

While Hawaii was absolutely the most costly team to bet on against the spread this season, the Seminoles might have been the biggest disappointment overall. Florida State was a projected national title contender before the season started but injuries and poor play led to them becoming one of the worst teams in the country to bet on. The Seminoles are coming off back-to-back wins but still finished with a 5-6 record straight up. Even worse, Florida State went 2-7-2 against the spread. The Seminoles’ 22.2-percent cover rate was the third-worst in the country behind only Hawaii and Texas El Paso. From start to finish, the 2017 season was definitely one to forget for Florida State fans.

Tennessee Volunteers

ATS Record This Season: 3-9-0

The Volunteers have had a tumultuous season. Things haven’t gotten any better since they fired head coach Butch Jones. Under Jones, though, the team was nothing short of an abject disaster. It started ugly with a near-loss at home to Georgia Tech on a neutral site. They Beat Indiana State but that was basically their highlight of the year. They lost to Florida, then barely beat UMass and then came the blowouts. Georgia stomped them 41-0, Alabama crushed them 45-7, Missouri smoked them 50-17, LSU beat them 30-10 and Vanderbilt – yes, Vanderbilt – smoked them 42-24. There weren’t many times this season when UT was actually in the game, which is why Jones got fired.

Florida Gators

ATS Record This Season: 3-8-0

The Seminoles weren’t the only major disappointment in the state of Florida. After winning three of their first four games, the Gators lost six of their final seven games to finish with a 4-7 record straight up. Meanwhile, Florida also ranked among the worst teams against the spread with a 3-8-0 record. The Gators ended the season with a 27.3-percent cover rate that ranked among the bottom-10 in the entire country. After such a promising start to the year, Florida clearly ranked among the most disappointing teams to bet on this college football season.

USC Trojans

ATS Record This Season: 3-9-1

While the state of Florida has been featured heavily in this column, California wasn’t without a substantial disappointment of its own from a betting perspective. The Trojans will play in the Pac-12 Championship game after registering 10 wins straight up this season. However, their brutal record against the spread indicates that they didn’t exactly meet expectations from a betting perspective. USC matched Florida with a 3-8-1 record against the spread this season for an identical 27.3-percent cover rate. The Trojans will have a shot to take home some hardware when they clash with Stanford in the Pac-12 Championship game this Friday night. However, a loss to the Cardinal could result in USC finishing among the bottom-five teams in the country in terms of point spread cover percentage for this season.
