Seventeen days into free agency, LeBron James remained undecided about where he would play next season, sources told ESPN. On July 17 he appeared on the bottom floor of the Javits Center at Fanatics Fest in New York before roughly 5,000 people, honoring an engagement he had agreed to in April even as he privately weighed his options.

Wearing a striped baseball hat and dark shades, James described the type of organization he sought — one that practiced championship habits daily and prioritized trusting the process. The crowd immediately interpreted his repeated use of the word “process” as a hint toward the Philadelphia 76ers, whose slogan has been tied to that phrase for more than a decade, according to ESPN.

A source close to James told ESPN the remark was not intended as an Easter egg and that he had been using similar language for years. ESPN noted that James used a similar expression after a Cleveland Cavaliers shootaround at the 76ers’ arena on Nov. 2, 2015, when he said, “It’s all a process.”

According to ESPN, James’ representation, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, initially had conversations with 27 teams and trimmed that field to five finalists: the Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves. ESPN spoke with sources close to James and inside each finalist club to chronicle the 24 days it took for him to reach a decision.

Several unexpected developments surfaced during the process. Sources told ESPN the Boston Celtics expressed interest, and the LA Clippers discussed a one-year offer north of $20 million that would have allowed James to remain in his Brentwood, California, home. The Celtics’ July 6 trade of Jaylen Brown to a division rival also factored into the changing landscape, and ESPN reported the move helped draw James’ attention to Philadelphia.

Rich Paul told ESPN his client was prioritizing his “basketball happiness” above other considerations. The Fanatics Fest exchange underscored the national intensity surrounding James’ decision and, ESPN reported, the moment proved prophetic a week later as his choice crystallized.
