The Detroit Lions opened training camp in Allen Park, Mich., and team reporter Eric Woodyard is filing daily updates on standouts, position battles, depth-chart movement and the quarterback room. The report will be updated frequently through the first full week of the preseason, which begins Aug. 13, according to Woodyard.

Head coach Dan Campbell said he does not expect All-Pro safety Kerby Joseph to be ready for Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints after the team placed him on the active/PUP list while he continues to deal with a knee injury. Joseph missed the final 11 games of the 2025 season with a chronic knee issue but has progressed to running and participating in change-of-direction work, Campbell said.

The team also placed Pro Bowl defensive back Brian Branch on the active/PUP list on July 26 while he recovers from a torn Achilles. Campbell said he anticipates Branch rejoining the team for practices in late training camp or in early September and added, “There is no setbacks. Take it as it comes and we’ll see.”

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs did not practice on Wednesday after offseason conversations about a potential long-term contract, Campbell said. “This is both sides working through something and we’ll take it as it comes, but that’s where it is,” he added.

Other items noted in the camp file include that running backs David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs (listed as Robinson and Gibbs in initial notes) appear to be hold-ins while seeking deals, and Campbell called the release of cornerback Jeff Arnold “unfortunate” but for the best. Reporters on site will continue to relay updates throughout the remainder of camp.
